Today: Air India gets makeover with a new logo, aircraft livery and cabins

Air India – a Star Alliance member – is the flag carrier of India. It’s the second largest carrier in India (after IndiGo) but it remains the largest international carrier out of India with an 18.6% market share. The airline was founded by J. R. D. Tata – an Indian aviator, industrialist, entrepreneur and chairman of Tata Group – as Tata Airlines in 1932; Tata himself flew its first single-engine de Havilland Puss Moth, carrying air mail from Karachi’s Drigh Road Aerodrome to Bombay’s Juhu aerodrome. In 1953, Air India was taken over by the government, but in 2021, the Tatas paid nearly $ 3 billion USD to buy the carrier back. Air India returned to its founders with record losses and a reputation severely dented – bad customer service, frequent delays and cancellations, and nightmarish experiences by passengers. This week, the Tata Group unveiled its new plans for Air India, which demonstrate some serious ambitions for a complete turnaround and a possible bright future.

In this article:

What do you think about Air India’s new identity, livery and cabins? Leave a comment.

AIR INDIA MAKEOVER

NEW BRAND IDENTITY, LOGO & AIRCRAFT LIVERY

Air India unveiled a new brand identity and aircraft livery as the airline moves ahead with its transformation plan since being taken over by Tata Group more than one-and-a-half years ago. The new look re-imagines the iconic Indian window shape, historically used by Air India, into a gold window frame that becomes central to the new brand design system. It symbolises a ‘Window of Possibilities’, according to a press release.

AIR INDIA NEW LIVERY

The logo of Air India that it used since 2014 showed a red swan with the orange Konark Chakra image on it. The airline’s new logo symbol ‘The Vista’ is inspired by the peak of the gold window frame, signifying limitless possibilities, progressiveness, and the airline’s bold, confident outlook for the future, it said in a release. The airline said the new aircraft livery and design features a palette of deep red, aubergine, purple and gold highlights as well as a chakra-inspired pattern. While red and white are Air India’s colors, the purple is taken from the livery of the airline Vistara. “It also boasts a striking new custom-made ‘Air India Sans’ font, marrying confidence with warmth to position Air India as premium, inclusive, and accessible,” the release said.

The new brand identity has been designed in partnership with the brand transformation company FutureBrand. Travelers will begin to see the new logo throughout their journey starting December 2023, when the airline’s first A350 enters the fleet in the new livery, according to the airline.

NEW GUEST EXPERIENCES

In addition to a new brand identity , Air India is also making significant investments throughout the guest experience to elevate its service and to strengthening its position as the preferred airline for travellers flying to, from, and within India:

  • The carrier has confirmed historic purchase agreements to acquire 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing at around $70 billion USD (based on published list prices), with deliveries of the new aircraft starting November this year. Air India’s firm orders include 34 A350-1000, six A350-900, 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 10 Boeing 777X widebody aircraft, as well as 140 Airbus A320neo, 70 Airbus A321neo and 190 Boeing 737MAX narrowbody aircraft.
  • Air India has launched its all-new inflight magazine, namaste.ai, which is now available on board all Air India domestic and international flights. A premium travel and lifestyle magazine, it reflects Air India’s vision of becoming a worldclass global airline with an Indian heart.
  • Air India has launched a new website and mobile app, offering a significantly improved web experience with new digital tools and features.
  • The carrier will also launch a new “open all hours, every day” customer contact center in nine Indian and foreign languages by the end of this year, as well as a completely redesigned loyalty program in early 2024 that will enable thousands of new redemption possibilities.
  • The airline is investing in building completely new lounges at Delhi and New York JFK airports, having recently announced a global lounge network expansion, achieving 100 per cent lounge access coverage for premium customers at all destinations in its international route network.
  • Air India has now welcomed more than 5,000 new staff, including 3,200 cabin crew and nearly 1,000 cockpit crew, who are helping to drive the cultural transformation taking place at the heart of the airline. It is also heavily investing in building one of the world’s largest aviation training academies in India that will upskill a massive number of aviation professionals.

NEW FIRST & BUSINESS CLASS CABINS

Last but not least, Air India is installing new First, Business and Economy Class cabins on its airplanes. The transformation of its fleet has already begun with the airline leasing and buying 20 widebody aircraft this year. A $ 400 billion USD program to completely refurbish the interiors of its legacy fleet of 43 widebody aircraft commences mid-2024, which will lead to the installation of brand-new seats in every cabin, new inflight entertainment systems, and inflight Wi-Fi internet connectivity. By March 2024, one third of the airline’s widebody fleet will be upgraded, and over the next two-and-a-half years, its entire long-haul fleet will be reborn. Air India released a short video, which showcases the new cabins of the carrier’s reconfigured Boeing 777 aircraft (watch below):

The video reveals the following facts about Air India’s new Boeing 777 interiors:

  • The First Class cabin will be a single row of suites arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration. Each suite will be fully flat and will have a door.
  • The Business Class seats will be arranged in a staggered 1-2-1 configuration. The fully flat seats will have direct aisle access and a privacy door.
  • The airline will install a Premium Economy Class product on its long haul fleet, with the seats arranged in a 2-4-2 layout.

Today: Review of Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort (Cyprus)

Elegant and redefined, occupying a stunning 2 km (1.2 miles) beachfront location, the brand-new 5-star Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort opened in May 2022 and takes luxury hospitality in Cyprus (and the Mediterranean region) to a different level. Delivering an exclusive island experience, the resort, which is crafted from natural Cyprus stone, has been designed to reflect the surrounding landscapes and embody the rich culture of the island in its every line. Amongst its extensive facilities are 163 sea view guestrooms & 39 suites, a 130 m (43 ft) long beach cove, three outdoor pools with sunbeds and quiet areas, a tranquil indoor pool, an outdoor playground for younger guests, a fabulous spa, and 10 restaurants & bars.

Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort features in my top 10 list of the best beach resorts in Europe.

Have you ever stayed at Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

In this review (more information and photos below my YouTube video):

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • Enjoying an exclusive seafront location on the island’s south-west coast, Cap St Georgse Hotel & Resort is the best five star hotel in Cyprus, a Mediterranean island destination known for its dazzling azure seas, terrific beaches and endless sunhine. Travelers from across the world flock to Cyprus to enjoy a relaxing holiday on its idyllic shores & beaches, but the island – which is known as the birthplace of the Greek goddess Aphrodite – is so much more than that. Cyprus’ rugged interior, archaeological sites, and rural villages make it a great destination for walking, cycling and cultural discovery too. Staying at Cap St George Hotel & Resort also has the advantage that it puts you within close proximity of the buzzing seaside town of Paphos, a UNESCO World Heritage City with rich crumbling legacy from its Greek, Roman and Byzantine eras. The hotel is a 40 min drive from Paphos Airport, one of the two main international airports on the island.
  • Enveloped by verdant gardens brimming with centuries old olive trees, fragrant herbs and endemic flora, Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort has been designed by international acclaimed architect George Andraos & Associates in London. Crafted from natural Cyprus stone, the resort’s modern architecture and sleek interiors reflect the surrounding Mediterranean landscapes and embody a refined interpretation of the natural landscapes and rich culture of Cyprus. The massive hillside property is built in different terraces and levels, which cascade down from the top of the hill towards the resort’s private beach cove and shoreline. The main building’s top level is the resort’s design highlight as it houses a stunning, two-storage, light-flooded atrium lobby featuring marble floors, a lounge bar with sky piano, and an impressive themed concept chandelier by Lasvit. The lobby opens to a terrace with breathtaking panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, the resort grounds and the sunset.
  • Offering a collection of 163 guestrooms and 39 suites including a stunning 7 bedroom Presidential Villa Suite, Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort has a diversity of choice, from family-friendly to solo travelers’ options. Guestrooms located within the main building – which overlooks the pool area – are furnished with king or twin beds, while interconnecting family suites are also available and located in the main building. Next to the main building is another hotel wing – called The Residences – which offers more private and relaxing landscaped resort surroundings. The Residence is home to some more guestrooms, 18 of them with private heated pool, as well as the hotel’s pool suites which all come in a one or two bedrooms configuration. During my visit, I was upgraded to a Residence guestroom with private pool. The room had a chic design with some subtle touches through natural earth tones and luxuriant furnishings, wall art and lighting. The bathroom featured a free standing bathtub, separate shower and double vanities.
  • Most travelers come to Cyprus to relax on a beach and/or near a pool, and Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort certainly delivers on this point. The property is built on a prime spot of the island with a 2 km (1.4 miles) long seafront. Most of the shoreline is comprised of rocky coves along a walking path, but there are few stretches of (hidden) sandy & pebbly beaches in between. Two areas along the massive seafront are a bit more developed and feature sunbeds with umbrellas that are exclusively available to hotel guests: a quiet area on a cliff and a private sandy cove with a length of 130 m (43 ft). The latter also features several cabanas (which can be used by hotel guests at no extra charge). If you prefer to lounge poolside instead of on the beach, the resort features four shimmering swimming pools adorned with Marazzi Piedra tiles: three outdoor pools on the main pool deck (one of them a dedicated kids’ pool) and one indoor pool in the spa (cf infra).
  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort features an excellent wellness center, called the Cleopatra Spa, on the ground floor of the main building. The spa – which is named after Queen Cleopatra of Egypt whose kingdom for a brief period also included Cyprus  – is a sanctuary of tranquility, serenity and silence. Clad in green Guatemalan marble, the spa offers bespoke treatments that are delivered with cutting-edge practices and ultra-premium products by Valmont, Cinq Mondes, or Kypwell brands. There are 8 treatment rooms, where guests can enjoy signature treatments like “Russian Banya”, Ayurveda, and Thai Massage. Other wellness facilities at the spa include a beautiful indoor pool area (with several sun loungers), hydrotherapy whirlpool, cold plunge pools, relaxation lounge, thermal saunas, steam rooms, aromatherapy experience showers, and Rasoul mud treatment chambers. The spa is also home to a hair salon, barber shop, a fully equipped, state-of-the-art Nautilus gym and a work out studio.
  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resorts offers five dining options in addition to five bars & clubs. Several of these venues are located at Agora Village Square, a central meeting point at the heart of the resort, which features restaurants, cafes, an outdoor cinema, a high-end boutique and an upscale jewelry store.
    • Named after the Italian word for ‘flavours’, Sapori Restaurant offers a whistle-stop tour of Italy’s rich gastronomy in Cyprus. The intimate venue delivers a quintessential trattoria experience, with rustic stone walls and a mouth-watering menu of exceptional Italian fare garnished with hearty servings of world-class hospitality.
    • Next to Sapori is Bonsai, a casually elegant Teppanyaki Japanese restaurant that is open for dinner only and which has both indoor and outdoor dining areas. Its menu specializes in Teppanyaki dishes and Asian contemporary cuisine.
    • Commanding a prime spot on the 7th floor of the main building, Sky7 is the resort’s signature restaurant and hosts rotating Michelin starred chefs from across the world on selected dates. This makes the hotel a pioneer, as it is the first hotel on the island to work with Michelin chefs. The elevated gourmet experience is heightened with panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea during the day and breathtaking sunsets come evening.
    • Showcasing the cuisine and wines of Cyprus & Greece, Mesoyios is the resort’s all-day dining restaurant. Located under a canopy of olive trees, the seafront venue serves delicious meat, fish and seafood prepared in a variety of Mediterranean styles paying tribute to cuisines and cultures of the region.
    • Yeronisos Restaurant is the hotel’s breakfast restaurant. Each morning (till 11 am), an excellent buffet is on display on the venue’s Calcatta Gold marble buffet station. Guests can enjoy the breakfast on the terrace or in the dining room which features white oak pillars shaped like trees.
    • Gelato serves patisserie, hot and cold beverages, fast snacks, afternoon homemade gelato with fresh fruit, frozen yogurts, cypriot sweets, waffles or crepes.
    • Kohili is a beach bar located on a small deck overlooking the sea and beach surrounded by trees and shrubs offering besides all kind of beverages and cocktails as well as traditional snack meze dishes & tapas with Cyprus Wines.
    • Living up to its name, the sixth-floor  Chroma Lounge & Bar’s breathtaking panoramic sea views are complemented by unique design elements, with an elegant Nero Marquina marble bar and a show-stopping Lasvit chandelier.  Guests can enjoy a coffee, a cool drink or a snack here. The evening can be ended with a beautiful sunset accompanied by live music.
    • Located near the Olympic sized swimming pool is the Thalassa Pool Bar, the resort’s most popular spot for a drink or snack. The bar serves cocktail creations and spirits, a selection of iced draught beers, non-alcoholic drinks and hot beverages.
    • The resort is also home to vibrant and exhilarating club, which can be booked for special occasions and which is available for private functions.
  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort offers several activities in the immediate area in case you can drag yourself out of the luxury enclave that the hotel is. Some examples:
    • The resort has its own ranch, so guests can arrange horse-riding via the concierge team. There are trails ranging from 30 to 90 minutes, as well as sunset rides along the sea. With a long history of excellence, the ranch offers a variety of programs, from one-on-one lessons to intermediate and advanced training.
    • With undulating hills and a rugged coastline, the landscape around Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort is a befitting exploration of the up-close-and-personal kind. Bicycle and buggy rentals are available to all guests so you can easily venture off the beaten track or along one of the dedicated cycling routes.
    • A fully serviced private yacht excursion offers a unique opportunity to explore the Akamas Peninsula and nearby National Park. Guests can escape into a world of crystal-clear waters as the captain takes them on a journey from coast to coast, stopping at remote sea caves and offering idyllic views along the way.
    • A private boat tour on a traditional fishing vessel offers an exclusive opportunity to experience Cypriot hospitality and  knowledge from the island’s local fishermen.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Cyprus is a visually stunning property that is sure to impress even the most discerning travelers with its palatial dimensions, top-notch service, world-class facilities and luxurious design. But some travelers might find that the resort lacks local charm and authenticity due to its ultra-modern architecture and sleek interiors (although the architects did try to incorporate some local elements in the overall design). Also, it is by no means an intimate property, so if you are looking for a small and intimate boutique hotel experience, you need to stay elsewhere.
  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort is a mammoth hotel built on gigantic site, so it does take some time to get around and that often involves a combination of walks, stairs and elevators (although buggy service can be provided on request). The massive scale of the hotel allows for fewer crowds and a peaceful vibe but it can also make things a tad more challenging when it comes to organizing your days out on the beach or near the pool (this is not the place to have forgotten something in your room when you are on the beach).
  • Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort is proud of its sustainable approach and green policies, but is still provides single-use plastics as toiletries in the bathrooms (albeit very good one, from the Lalique brand). It would be better if the hotel would change its in-room toiletries to larger refillable bottles, similar to what is found in other luxury hotels across the world.

TIPS FOR FUTURE GUESTS & SAVE MONEY
  • Save money: read here my tips for getting the best deal at a luxury hotel like Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort (and/or receive many free perks).
  • Read my tips for preparing your trip in time.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Blessed with a sunny and mild Mediterranean climate, Cyprus is known as a year-round destination. The best time to visit the island is either side of the peak summer season, in the months of May, June, September and October. During these months, the temperatures are warm enough for swimming, but not uncomfortably hot and humid. Also, the crowds are much thinner, so it’s easier to enjoy the beaches & sights and you will not pay premium prices for a hotel room. During the winter months from November to March, you can expect mild weather, mostly sunny skies and some rainy days, making this a great period to explore the island’s historical sites.

Hotel rooftops have an irresistible attraction to many travelers, and they are sometimes a reason why we choose to stay in a particular hotel. To make my list of the best hotel rooftop in the world, these 10 social hot spots had to offer more than only spectacular views.

With sheltered blue lagoons, vibrant coral reefs, a majestic, mountainous interior, and five star overwater hotels, French Polynesia is an idyllic tropical paradise that draws visitors from all over the world. The airline’s “Share The Love” contest is giving away a total of 1,000,000 airline miles from its loyalty program Club Tiare in increments of 25,000 miles each to winning travelers. Each winner who gets the prize of 25,000 miles, can also give 25,000 to a person of their choice (explaining the giveaway’s title ‘Share The Love’). The winner will also receives a private helicopter flight courtesy of Tahiti Nui Helicopters (you can watch a video of my helicopter sightseeing flight above Bora Bora below).

There are two ways to enter the contest (which is open to all nationalities): travelers can either enter the contest for free on the airline’s website or be automatically entered when purchasing an Air Tahiti Nui flight – by September 30 of this year – for travel between now and September 30, 2024. Entries are limited to one per person during the entire contest period. A draw will be made every month to designate one winner per month over the period 1st August to 30th September 2023.

Last year, I flew with Air Tahiti to and from French Polynesia in Business Class and I was very happy with their service. You can read my detailed trip reports of these flights here:

In 2019, Air Tahiti Nui entirely renewed its fleet by four Boeing 787-9s, which it proudly calls its  “Tahitian Dreamliners”. One of the great things about flying with Air Tahiti Nui is the tropical ambiance of its aircraft, which immerses you in the “mana” of the Tahitian island as soon as you step onboard. For example, a floor-to-ceiling photo of Bora Bora island takes center stage in the plane’s entry galley, a reminder that the plane is about to head to one of the world’s most beautiful paradises. Upon entering the plane, the traditionally dressed and always smiling cabin crew also hands out Tiare flowers, the national flower of the islands of Tahiti. It all evokes a sense of holiday, which helps to leave behind the annoyances and stress of getting to and through the airport. Air Tahiti Nui provides service to Tahiti from Paris, Los Angeles, Seattle, Auckland and Tokyo. Through partnerships and code share agreements, the airlines offers connections from 30+ other destinations, including Sydney, Beijing and New York City.

Today: Review of Prince De Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel (Paris, France)

The Prince de Galles is a legendary jewel of the Parisian Art Deco movement and a five-star Luxury Collection Hotel (part of Marriott‘s hotel portfolio). Since its inauguration in 1929, the hotel has excelled as a symbol of sophistication and grace. Situated on the prestigious Avenue George V, the hotel benefits from a premier location in the Parisian Golden Triangle near the Champs-Elysées. Its 116 elegant rooms and 43 suites provide an intimate atmosphere for Paris’ most discerning travelers. Not to mention the Akira Back restaurant, which offers an elevated dining experience full of explosive flavours. The property is also home to one of Paris’ most exclusive hotel suites, Suite Lalique by Patrick Hellmann.

Prince De Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel features in my top 10 lists of the best luxury hotels in Paris and the most exclusive hotel suites in Paris.

Have you ever stayed at Prince De Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

In this review (more info and photos below my YouTube video):

PROS & THINGS I LIKE
  • Situated in Paris‘ most desirable city quarter, the Golden Triangle by Champs-Elysées, Prince de Galles Hotel has been an iconic jewel on Avenue George V since its opening in 1928, offering one of the best locations in the French capital for both leisure and business travelers. Set in the high-end designer 8e arrondissement, the property is just steps away from cultural & historical Parisian landmarks and also close to some of the most prestigious haute-couture boutiques of the city and the city’s main business districts. The tranquil beauty of the Seine and the legendary landmark Arc de Triomphe are just around the corner. Metro station George V (line 1) is a five min walk away.
  • Prince de Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel, is located right next to the Four Seasons George V Hotel, with whom its shares its royal history linked to the British monarchy. Both neighboring hotels were run in the 1920s by two brothers and they both owe their names to their original aims: to welcome the King of England, George V, and his son, the Prince of Wales Edward VII , during their annual visits to the French capital. King George V stayed at the Four Seasons while his son stayed at the Prince de Galles Hotel. Today, both hotels could not be more different though: Prince de Galles Hotel is decidedly 1920s while the Four Seasons George V Hotel features a more classic decor and traditional grandeur.
  • Prince de Galles Hotel was built at the beginning of the Art Deco period by the famous architect André Arfvidson. The Art Deco movement took its name from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, where simple, clean shapes and geometric forms were introduced to ditch the romantic, curvilinear codes of Art Nouveau. In 2013, the property underwent a meticulous two-year $100 million USD restoration under the supervision of world-famous designer Pierre-Yves Rochon and in collaboration with ERTIM Architectes SA. The renovation brought the hotel back to the whimsically opulent era of the Parisian Art Deco 1930s. The lobby was re-designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon to be reminiscent of an intimate Art Deco salo. The public space is adorned with black marble, Macassar ebony, armchairs and exquisite textiles, and features a handcrafted chandelier by Delisle as its pièce de résistance.
  • Prince de Galles Hotel offers discreet residential luxury in each of its 115 guestrooms and 44 suites, many of which include private balconies with stunning views of the Paris cityscape. Cloaked in silken celadon fabric, the luxuriously appointed guest rooms celebrate the hotel’s distinct personality while preserving its authentic elegance and rich heritage. Rochon selected custom-designed Art Deco furniture and elegant furnishings in Macassar ebony wood to contrast the geometrically-patterned black Saint Laurent marble floors with intricate mosaics created by Italian artisans. The fine arabesques on the rooms’ carpets are inspired by the mosaic scrolls surrounding the hotel’s famous courtyard, visible from the windows. A grand Macassar work desk and a spacious sycamore dressing room complete the residential ambience of the suites. Plush terry cloth robes and slippers and toiletries from the Lalique collection are provided in all rooms.
  • During my visit, I stayed in Prince De Galles Hotel’s most exclusive room, the Suite Lalique by Patrick Hellmann. In partnership with the historic Paris-based glassmaker Lalique, German designer Patrick Hellmann has swathed the entire suite in a mosaic of mostly black and gold to bring that Art Deco look to life, and then layered it with texture, such as sculptural side tables and blonde wood furniture, to provide some balance. Hellmann also selected some iconic crystal pieces for the suite, like the Seville chandelier – first designed by Marc Lalique in 1947 – that hangs over the curvy black-and-gold staircase. The dazzling duplex suite features one bedroom, a living room and a dining room – all with one-of-a-kind Art Deco inspired design accents. Covered entirely in veiny grigio carnico marble, the ensuite bathroom is equipped with two basins, a standalone bathtub, and a walk-in rain shower. A highlight of the suite is an expansive rooftop terrace which offers views of the entire city of Paris, including the Eiffel Tower.
  • Guests of Prince de Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Paris can enjoy a fine dining experience at three different restaurants & bars, which are all located on the hotel’s ground floor:
    • Prince de Galles’ signature restaurant is Akira Back restaurant, named after the international, Michelin-starred chef who has chosen the Paris hotel as his first European venture. Opened in 2022, this unique venue offers modern Japanese cuisine with Korean and international flavors. Each morning, breakfast is also served at Akira Back, as well as an exceptional brunch on Sundays.
    • At 19.20, a cocktail and culinary memoir bar located next to Akira Back, the spirit of Paris is combined with elegance and warmth to elevate the art of mixology.
    • Le Patio is an invigorating haven of peace in the heart of Paris, a refreshing outdoor terrace surrounded by greenery, ideal to enjoy a lunch, a dinner under the stars, or simply a cocktail. Adorned with thousands of mosaics, the elegant courtyard features four cabanas to offer additional privacy for guests.
  • Prince de Galles Hotel features a Pierre-Yves Rochon designed fitness center, a Wellness Suite by Olivier Lecocq, and an event space for celebrations hosting up to 70 people. The Wellness Suite by Olivier Lecocq offers a rejuvenating experience, inspired by the therapeutic products of Unique Elixir Paris. Guests may choose to enjoy a luxury treatment in the hotel’s sole treatment room, which includes a hamman, or in the privacy of their room. You can also maintain your health at the hotel’s impressive on-site fitness center, which is complimentary for hotel guests. It features treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bicycles and a Stairmaster, as well as free weights, fitness balls and stretching bands. Upon request, the hotel can also organize individual sessions with a personal trainer, available at a charge. For guests’ comfort and convenience, the fitness centers offers towels, fresh fruit, newspapers and complimentary mineral water.
  • Prince De Galles Hotel is managed by the ‘The Luxury Collection‘, which belongs to Marriott’s portfolio’s of hotels. Most hotels in The Luxury Collection are smaller establishments in converted palaces or restored historic hotels. Originated in 1906 under the CIGA brand as a collection of Europe’s most celebrated and iconic properties, Today, The Luxury Collection brand is a glittering ensemble of more than 85 of the world’s finest hotels and resorts in more than 30 countries in bustling cities and spectacular destinations around the world. The brand includes some iconic properties like the Gritti Palace in Venice, North Island in the Seychelles, the Royal Hawaiian in Honolulu, and Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens. The Luxury Collection label not only guarantees an excellent product, but also means you can earn and/or redeem Marriott Rewards points for any upcoming stay at the property.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

  • Prince de Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel is a Parisian gem but it’s a rather small property. There’s not much beyond its 159 rooms, fine dining restaurant, outdoor patio, and historic bar, and leisure facilities are limited to a well equipped gym and one treatment room. There is no pool, due to the fact that the architects had to work within the constraint of existing structures in the heritage building.
  • Rooms and suites at Prince de Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel face either the street or the inner courtyard. Rooms that are located on Avenue George V can get some street noise, so you may want to request a room on the courtyard (although these rooms don’t come with a view, especially those on the lower floors). Also, some of the entry level rooms are a bit on the small size (this is Paris after all) so you may want to book a higher room category or a suite for more space.

MY VERDICT
  • Location: 9/10
  • Design: 8/10
  • Pool: not available
  • Rooms: 8/10
  • Food: 9/10
  • Breakfast: 9/10
  • Spa: 7/10
  • Service: 9/10
  • Value for money: 8/10
  • Overall experience: very good 8,4/10

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Paris is best visited between April and May (spring) or September through November (autumn), right before or directly after the summertime high tourist season. You’ll contend with fewer tourists, enjoy somewhat mild temperatures (the city’s weather is notoriously finicky), and also experience Paris as the locals do, at its laid-back best.

HOW TO GET THERE

Paris can easily be reached by plane, train or car. For those coming by plane: there are three airports in Paris: Charles de Gaulle, Orly and Beauvais. The two main airports are CDG to the north-east and Orly to the south and both airfields are well connected to the city center, while Paris Beauvais airport is located quite far up north and used by budget airlines.

10. ROYAL SUITE AT HOTEL PLAZA ATHENEE

Just steps away from shops like Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Saint Laurent, Hôtel Plaza Athénée is a hotspot for discerning travelers who love shopping. With four bedrooms, four bathrooms, two drawing rooms, an office and a separate kitchen, the hotel’s Royal Suite is the largest suite in Paris, perfect for celebrities and royalty or simply an experience you’ll treasure forever. Decorated in a magnificent classic style and full of antiques and original artworks, the serene masterpiece of a suite was created by world-renowned interior designer Marie-José Pommereau. The suite’s fifth floor view embraces the width of the entire hotel and gazes over avenue Montaigne and the Eiffel Tower beyond. If you’re looking for something smaller but just as unique, opt for the Haute Couture Suite, whose design honors the French capital’s love relation with Haute Cauture; a classical French palace ambience fills the living room, bedroom, dressing and bathroom with a sense of splendour, elaborate moldings and silver-leaf detail.

9. GRAND PALAIS SUITE AT LA RESERVE PARIS HOTEL & SPA

Like the emblematic monument after which it is named, the Grand Palais Suite embodies the art of living on a grand scale that is so very rare in Paris. As soon as guests enter the suite, they find themselves in a beautiful Parisian apartment from the Belle Epoque: an age when there was no stinting on square meters nor on volumes. In 1900, the Grand Palais had been built to magnify “French art” at the World’s Fair. Today, this suite also pays tribute to a proud French heritage, with its authentic Napoleon III furniture, its antiques lovingly collected over the years, as well as its historical or contemporary works bridging the centuries. The iconic Eiffel Tower may be admired from the suite’s balcony, as can the majestic glass roof of the Grand Palais. The Grand Palais Suite is composed of two generous lounge areas, two private bars, a wine cellar offering Grand Cru vintages, two bedrooms and an elegant Carrara marble bathroom.

8. L’APPARTEMENT PRINCE BONAPARTE AT SHANGRI-LA HOTEL PARIS

The extraordinary L’Appartement Prince Bonaparte, situated on the Shangri-La Paris Hotel’s second floor, was originally the private residence of Prince Roland Bonaparte and holds Monument Historique status. A shining example of the Directoire style, this expansive one-bedroom suite has 5 meters (16 feet) high ceilings with authentic crown mouldings and gilt work, Versailles-style parquet floors, period artwork and decor that seamlessly blends classic French late 18th century design with subtle Asian influences. Intimate balconies offer quaint views of Avenue d’Iéna and the Guimet Museum, while the abundantly spacious living room and separate dining area can comfortably seat up to 8 guests. The intricately designed bedroom is truly befitting of its former resident’s royal pedigree, bathed in varying shades of blue and gold with a large crystal chandelier at its center, draped fabric headboard and velvet curtains framing floor-to-ceiling windows, tied back with handmade tassels.

7. THE PENINSULA SUITE AT THE PENINSULA PARIS

The largest suite of the 5-star Peninsula Paris Hotel is an authentic Haussmannian residence. High ceilings with exquisite moldings, a fireplace, and large double-doored windows are all signature features of the elegance of traditional Parisian life. The sparkle of fine Baccarat chandeliers reflecting in the smooth black lacquer of a grand Yamaha piano, the rich silks and brocades created by Prelle, the trimmings of the House of Declercq, and the finesse of Tai Ping carpets steep the décor in tradition, yet harmoniously contrast with the modern curves of the large sofas and elegant mirrors. This spectacular and vastly spacious suite has the ability to adapt according to the number of its occupants. Ideally designed for two adults, each of whom has access to their own dedicated facilities and equipment, it also conveniently connects to two adjoining rooms to offer a large shared haven of tranquility. Last but not least, everything has been designed to ensure the safety and privacy of the hotel’s prestigious guests, which often include A-list celebrities.

6. SUITE COCO CHANEL AT THE RITZ PARIS

As a neighbor on the rue Cambon, Gabrielle Chanel decided one day in 1937 to take a suite at the Ritz Paris. She would stay for 34 years. She felt at ease amid the hotel’s luxury and elegance and gradually brought in her favorite furniture, such as Coromandel lacquered screens, gilded mirrors and a velvet banquette, until finally she had redecorated the whole space. “The Ritz is my home”, she would tell visitors who admired her rock crystal chandeliers and art collection. Today the famous Ritz Hotel on the Place Vendôme has a two-bedroom, two-bathroom suite, which was designed in her honour by the late Chanel creative director Karl Lagerfeld. The suite’s color palette and furnishings reflect Coco Chanel’s love for Asian lacquer, gilded mirrors and the pairing of black with white. The Coco Chanel suite is one of 15 prestige suites at The Ritz that are named for the elite writers, artists, designers and nobility who have all been guests (or lived) at the hotel in the years since its opening in 1898.

5. MANDARIN PENTHOUSE SUITE AT MANDARIN ORIENTAL PARIS

Situated on the top floor of the Mandarin Oriental Paris Hotel, the Mandarin Penthouse Suite offers panoramic views of the city. Decorated in a palette of gold, white, beige and plum, the split-level suite enjoys an opulent 1930s feel, which is balanced by white interiors and double-height floor-to-ceiling windows that let the natural light flood in. With bespoke furnishings and artwork – such as a staircase fashioned from guilloche metal and an embroidered headboard featuring work by Man Ray – the overall effect is breathtaking. The outstanding suite includes a vast living room, dining room (complete with a bar), kitchen, bar, study and private gym, as well as a huge bedroom. The ensuite bathroom features gold cabochons on the floor, a steam room and bath with views that look out onto the Eiffel Tower. For those who plan on inviting a group of friends or family, the suite’s expansive terrace is a perfect space for a convivial affair. Guests can connect to the adjoining split-level Panoramic Suite and have the hotel’s entire top floor for themselves.

4. LES GRAND APPARTEMENTS AT HOTEL DE CRILLON, A ROSEWOOD HOTEL

After a four year renovation, Hôtel de Crillon, a Rosewood Hotel reopened in 2017 on the Place De La Concorde, unveiling a fabulous transformation that has made it the most desirable address in Paris for discerning travelers. And while there are several stunning suites to choose from, such as the Suite Marie-Antoinette and Suite Louis XV, it are the two Karl Lagerfeld–designed Les Grands Appartements that are the hotel’s pièces de résistance. The Grands Appartements, located on the fourth floor, offer breathtaking views of Paris and its monuments, including the Eiffel Tower, Grand Palais, Musée d’Orsay, and Place de la Concorde. The works of renowned fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, and well-established enthusiast of the eighteenth century, the suites were designed to interpret his personal vision of French chic and modernity. Each of the Grands Appartements features bespoke furniture designed by Karl Lagerfeld, and along with the unique bathroom décors, offer guests a true experience in style.

With six terraces offering a 360 degree view of Paris, the phenomenal Penthouse Suite at the Four Seasons Hotel King George V sprawls across 160 square meters (1,630 square feet) of pure luxury on the property’s 8th floor. Designed by the talented interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon as a real Parisian pied-à-terre, the Penthouse offers a spectacular hideaway among the city’s rooftops and offers some of the best views of the Eiffel Tower in town. To create this masterpiece, Rochon worked with some of the world’s finest luxury brands (Baccarat, Lalique, Lelièvre, Edmond Petit, Veraseta and Bobic) to create an understated, light and airy interior in the suite’s open, elegant spaces. The suite is fitted with exquisite silks, marbles, a melange of both contemporary and antique furniture, travertine flooring and walls decorated with sycamore and majilite. Prince de Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel has teamed up with German designer Patrick Hellmann and the iconic French crystal glass manufacturer Lalique to offer a unique suite experience like no other to be found in Paris. Nestled on the 8th and 9th floors of the hotel, the dazzling Lalique duplex suite has a minimalist contemporary feel that exalts the original Art Deco style. The suite’s first level features a large entrance and office where a golden mosaic decor welcomes guests in search of the utmost discretion. Every last Friday of the month, you can read my news round-up of what’s happening in the world of luxury travel. In this issue:

  1. The superjumbo returns: Etihad Airways’ Airbus A380 returns to the sky
  2. Virgin Atlantic plans to operate the first transatlantic flight using 100% SAF
  3. MGM Resorts will join Marriott’s loyalty program
  4. The Ritz-Carlton debuts in Fukuoka, Japan
  5. COMO Hotels will open a property in Singapore next month
  6. W Hotels debuts in Budapest, Hungary
  7. The Rome EDITION is now open
  8. Mandarin Oriental announces a new hotel in Miami, USA
  9. One&Only One Za’abeel Dubai is now accepting reservations
  10. Air New Zealand is serving the flavors of Aotearoa in a new onboard menu

1. The superjumbo returns: Etihad Airways’ Airbus A380 returns to the sky

Etihad Airways, the award-winning national airline of the United Arab Emirates, celebrated the return to service of its Airbus A380 on its popular route between Abu Dhabi and London Heathrow. Etihad’s A380 Economy cabin features 68 Economy Space seats offering an additional 4 inches in leg room, and 337 Economy Smart seats that come with Etihad’s signature fixed-wing headrest and large pillows for added comfort. There are 70 Business Studios available on Etihad’s A380 upper deck, granting privacy to customers and creating a serene atmosphere. On the upper deck, guests can also enjoy access to The Lobby, a serviced lounge and bar area located between the First and Business Class cabins. Guests can choose from nine First Apartments featuring a private living space with exquisite amenities and designer tableware, a wide leather lounge chair and a separate ottoman which converts into a lie-flat bed. First Class guests can freshen up in the comfort of the Apartment with personal vanity units, as well as take advantage of the First Class shower room (read my review here). The A380 is also home to the Residence, the world’s only three-room suite in the sky with guests able to enjoy service and hospitality from a dedicated team of Etihad cabin crew. Available to book for up to two guests, The Residence features a private living room, bedroom and ensuite bathroom where guests can refresh in a shower at 40,000ft.

2. Virgin Atlantic plans to operate the first transatlantic  flight using 100% SAF

Virgin Atlantic and Rolls-Royce performed a successful Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blend ground test on the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine. The test marks a key milestone in the project which will see the world’s first 100% SAF flight travel across the Atlantic Ocean from London Heathrow to New York JFK on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, set to take off on 28 November 2023. SAF typically delivers CO2 lifecycle emissions savings of more than 70% whilst performing like the traditional jet fuel it replaces. SAF has a fundamental role to play in aviation’s decarbonisation and pathway to Net Zero 2050. Today, SAF represents less than 0.1% of jet fuel volumes and fuel standards allow for just a 50% SAF blend in commercial jet engines. The one-off Virgin Atlantic flight in November will demonstrate the potential of SAF as a 100% drop-in replacement for fossil fuel today. Shai Weiss, CEO, Virgin Atlantic, commented: “The 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel transatlantic flight will be a historic moment in aviation’s roadmap to decarbonisation. Alongside fleet transformation, SAF is the most readily available way for our industry to decarbonise.”

3. MGM Resorts will join Marriott’s loyalty program

Marriott and MGM Resorts announced an exclusive long-term strategic licensing agreement and the creation of MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, which will launch in October 2023, and encompass 17 of MGM’s resorts, representing more than 40,000 rooms in Las Vegas and other cities across the USA. Of the 17 MGM resorts that will join MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, four properties will also be affiliated with existing Marriott collection brands: Bellagio Resort & Casino will join The Luxury Collection, ARIA Resort & Casino will join Autograph Collection, Park MGM will become part of Tribute Portfolio, and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas will continue its affiliation with Autograph Collection. Eight MGM resorts in Las Vegas will join MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy: Vdara Hotel & Spa, MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, NoMad Las Vegas, The Signature at MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, New York-New York Hotel & Casino, Luxor Hotel and Casino, and Excalibur Hotel & Casino. Five MGM Resorts in other USA locations will also join MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy: Borgata (Atlantic City, New Jersey), Beau Rivage (Biloxi, Mississippi), MGM Grand Detroit (Michigan), MGM National Harbor (Maryland), and MGM Springfield (Massachusetts).

BELLAGIO LAS VEGAS

4. The Ritz-Carlton debuts in Fukuoka, Japan

The Ritz-Carlton, part of Marriott’s portfolio of 31 hotel brands, announced the opening of The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka on the island of Kyushu in Southern Japan. Rising above Fukuoka, the luxury hotel is situated within the 364 ft (111 m) main tower of Fukuoka Daimyo Garden City, the tallest urban lifestyle complex in the city’s core commercial district. Overseen by Melbourne-based Layan Architects + Designers, the hotel’s interior design and art take inspiration from Fukuoka’s traditional yarn-dyed silk and kimono weaving craft, called “Hakata-ori”. The hotel features 167 generously sized guestrooms (including 20 suites), four restaurants, two bars, and a spa with indoor pool. The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka brings the brand’s famous service and contemporary aesthetic to one of Japan’s fastest growing cities famous for its thriving start-up scene as well as for its enduring history, traditions, and outstanding culinary culture. Fukuoka was once a key waypoint of Silk Road trade routes, and today the city remains a major gateway between Japan and the rest of Asia. The destination is famous for its annual festivals, such as the 800-year old Hakata Gion Yamakasa summer festival, designated by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

5. COMO Hotels will open a property in Singapore next month

COMO Orchard on Bideford Road will become the newest destination concept by COMO Group, the Singapore-based, family-owned portfolio of luxury lifestyle companies created by founder-owner Christina Ong. Opening in successive phases, starting in September, the 156- room COMO Metropolitan Singapore will be the Group’s first hotel in its home country. The property will feature a beautiful rooftop pool and bar. The rest of the 19-floor building will include two floors of fashion retail curated by Club21 for seasonal collections and pop-up partnerships. The hotel’s spa – COMO Shambhala – aims a thoughtful, diagnostic approach to holistic wellbeing, and will offer numerous classes, workshops and multi-day wellness paths. The new COMO Cuisine restaurant will expand the brand’s commitment to creating some of the best food in Singapore, celebrating the debuts in Asia for internationally-acclaimed French pastry chef Cédric Grolet and restaurateur Simon Kim of COTE Korean Steakhouse, the beloved Michelin-starred restaurant in New York and Miami. Known to never repeat herself with her creative collaborations, owner Christina Ong has also engaged the award-winning talents of Italian architect Paola Navone (Otto Studio), Japanese interior design-consultant Koichiro Ikebuchi (Atelier Ikebuchi), and Norwegian digital artist Thomas Hilland in the development of COMO Metropolitan Singapore.

6. W Hotels debuts in Budapest, Hungary

W Hotels, part of Marriott, announced the highly anticipated debut of W Budapest, marking the brand’s first opening in Hungary. Housed in the historic Drechsler Palace, W Budapest is set to become an evolutionary heartbeat of the city with visionary design, eclectic gastronomy and a socially driven spirit drawn from the cosmopolitan capital. Located on Andrássy Avenue, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city’s most luxurious shopping street, W Budapest features 151 stylish guestrooms and suites as well as three innovative dining concepts, all influenced by Budapest’s rich history, creativity and diversity. Interior designers Bowler James Brindley (London) and Bánáti + Hartvig (Hungary) have carefully restored and reimagined Drechsler Palace, drawing inspiration from its rich cultural history and multiple identities as a café, social hub and Hungarian State Ballet Academy, to create captivating design narratives. From soft layering to the use of metallic meshing to create perspective and intrigue throughout the hotel’s public spaces and guestrooms, the design concept has created spaces that reveal new depths each time they are experienced. Further inspiration has been sourced from the grand French Renaissance architectural aesthetic throughout the city, leading to a spirited modernization with color palettes of green, coral and deep blues and paired with contemporary Zsolnay inspire tiles, stained glass features and jewelry-inspired light fittings.

7. The Rome EDITION is now open

Conceived, concepted, and programmed by the visionary entrepreneur, Ian Schrager, executed and interpreted by the hotel owners, Statuto Group, the intimate Rome EDITION sets a new standard in the Eternal City. Its sophistication, attention to detail, refinement, and high design aesthetic make it set to become a meeting place for Romans and travelers alike. Positioned in one of the most enviable areas of Rome, the hotel is only a few short steps from Via Veneto, the most sought-after street in all of Italy. It was immortalized in La Dolce Vita and embodies Italian flare in all its glory. Not only that – all the major attractions are within easy reach, including the Piazza Barberini, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain and the ever-beautiful Borghese Gardens. The hotel has three unique bars, a rooftop lounge, bar and pool, a show-kitchen restaurant, a well-appointed urban wellness space with gym and treatment rooms, and a courtyard garden where guests can while away the time sipping their favorite drink or sampling the peerless food menu from adored Roman Chef Paola Colucci, the hotel’s chef partner. The 91 rooms, including 17 suites, have all the design elements the brand is renowned for: the muted tones, the accents of walnut wood and stunning custom designed furniture.

8. Mandarin Oriental announces a new hotel in Miami, USA

Mandarin Oriental has announced an agreement to manage a new Mandarin Oriental hotel and branded residences in Brickell Key, one of Miami’s most prestigious neighborhoods. The project is being developed by Swire Properties, Mandarin Oriental’s joint-venture partner at the existing Mandarin Oriental, Miami, and will form part of the One Island Drive development, consisting of two towers connected by an amenity podium. The new-build hotel will feature 151 guestrooms including 60 suites, as well as 61 private Residences and 28 hotel Residences, all enjoying spectacular ocean and city views. Kohn Pederson Fox will design the exterior architecture and Parisian designer Laura Gonzales will create the hotel interiors. Thai firm Shma will lead the lush landscape architecture throughout the property. A variety of dynamic restaurants and bars, flexible meeting and event space as well as an expansive Spa at Mandarin Oriental will offer guests and local residents a compelling lifestyle choice. Adjacent to the hotel, a stand-alone tower will house 220 Residences at Mandarin Oriental, comprising 2-4 bedroom residences and two exclusive penthouses. The Residences will be designed by Parisian designer Tristan Auer and all residences will be managed by Mandarin Oriental providing a unique lifestyle with the best of both worlds: the comforts of a private home combined with the unsurpassed amenities and legendary service for which the brand is renowned. The new Mandarin Oriental, Miami is set to open in 2030.

9. One&Only One Za’abeel Dubai is now accepting reservations

Located in the beating heart of one of the world’s most dynamic cities, the first-ever vertical urban resort from ultra-luxury hospitality brand One&Only is set to welcome guests from 1 December 2023. Designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, One&Only One Za’abeel‘s interiors will take their cue from the Za’abeel location. Meaning ‘white sand’ in the local Emirati dialect, Za’abeel’s soulful narrative is intuitively woven into the fabric of the resort, with a soothing neutral colour palette and subtle sand motifs in the textiles, artworks, and sculptural lighting. For example, the Sanctuary Suites will include a massage table, meditation and stretching zone, exercise equipment and in-room spa treatments, while the Creative Suites will feature acoustic panelling and the latest AV technology. The property will feature a floating boulevard with culinary concepts from Michelin-lauded chefs including Anne-Sophie Pic, Bo Songvisava and Dylan Jones, Mehmet Gürs, Paco Morales and Tetsuya Wakuda. The resort will also feature a rejuvenating Spa Clinic, state-of-the-art fitness hub, an inspiring KidsOnly Club, luxury retail boutiques, with a handpicked collection of fashion, fragrances, and accessories. One&Only One Za’abeel will also feature two gala ballrooms, six meeting rooms, a private club on the 53rd floor, and an events lawn overlooking the city.

10. Air New Zealand is serving the flavors of Aotearoa in a new onboard menu

Air New Zealand has unveiled its latest culinary and beverage menu that showcases the largest range of New Zealand suppliers and native ingredients than ever before. A Taste of Aotearoa is the next evolution of Air New Zealand’s popular Aotearoa on a Plate dining concept. Inspired by the rich heritage and diverse bounty of New Zealand, the new menu brings together indigenous flavors and contemporary cuisine. The new menu is onboard Business Premier cabins now, and is available on all long haul flights out of New Zealand. Air New Zealand Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty says the new onboard food and beverage offering was inspired by manaakitanga – the Māori tradition of hospitality – and is a true celebration of Aotearoa New Zealand’s incredible culinary heritage.”There’s something truly magical about the native flavours of New Zealand – from the peppery spiciness of horopito to the earthy goodness of kawakawa. By infusing our dishes with native ingredients, we pay homage to the traditional uses of these ingredients while creating a modern and memorable dining experience for our customers.” Some of the delicious A Taste of Aotearoa cuisine found on select premium menus departing from New Zealand include:

  • Superfood Salad with horopito dusted New Zealand salmon
  • Creamy kawakawa mushrooms on rye toast, sautéed spinach and grilled tomatoes
  • Ahia smoked moki on kawakawa blini
  • Grass fed New Zealand lamb rump with horopito rub

Wednesday newsletters always feature a hotel or flight review.

I recently enjoyed a wonderful holiday in the Maldives. During my trip, I did not stay at Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani – my favorite resorts in the Maldives (I am going back though in 2024) – but I tried out some new, ultra-luxurious and fabulous resorts. Read my trip reports here:

Today: Review of Edelweiss Air’s Airbus A340 Business Class (Liberia to Zürich)

Last spring, I flew in Business Class onboard an Edelweiss Air Airbus A340 aircraft from the Maldives’ capital city Male to Zürich in Switzerland. Edelweiss Air is a Swiss leisure & charter airline and a sister company of Swiss International Air Lines (also known as SWISS). The carrier, which has its hub at Zürich Airport, was founded in 1995 and has been part of the Lufthansa Group since 2008. The company’s name is derived from the Swiss national flower, the Edelweiss, which is also painted on its aircraft. Edelweiss Air serves dozens of leisure destinations in more than 30 countries worldwide with a fleet of thirteen Airbus A320 and four Airbus A340 aircraft. The carrier’s A340s feature a Business Class cabin & seats which are similar to the one offered by SWISS (albeit styled in a different design). The onboard service and soft product is vastly different though. Overall, my flight experience with Edelweiss Air was good and acceptable for a leisure airline (but far from memorable).

Have you ever flown with Edelweiss Air? If so, what was your experience? Leave a comment.

  • Trip: Velana International Airport (MLE) to Zürich, Switzerkand (ZRH)
  • Airline: Edelweiss Air
  • Aircraft type: Airbus A340-300
  • Aircraft registration number:  HB-JMF (built in 2003)
  • On time departure: yes (12:30 pm)
  • On time arrival: yes (6:30 pm)
  • Miles: 4850 miles (7810 km)
  • Flight time: 10 hours
  • Seat: 17A
  • Class: Business Class

In this review (more information & photos below my YouTtube video):

  2. Business Class cabin

  4. Amenities & bedding
  5. Meals
  6. Entertainment
  7. Onboard internet
  8. Other inflight experiences
  9. My verdict (score)

1. COST OF THE TICKET

The one-way ticket from Male to Zürich was paid with miles via Lufthansa’s frequent flyer program Miles & More. The total cost of the ticket was 56,000 miles + 250 euros.

2. BUSINESS CLASS CABIN

In a somewhat unusual configuration, Edelweiss Air’s A340 Business Class cabin is located in the middle of the plane, over the wings (and not in the front of the plane, which is mostly the case with the Business Class cabins of other airlines). The Business Class cabin features 27 flatbed seats, spreads over 6 rows and arranged in an alternate 1-2-1 and 2-2-1 layout (a so called staggered configuration or Sogerma Solstys layout). This layout feels rather dense as the foot compartment for each seat is located between and under the seats in front. The center seats come in pairs, while the seats on the left and right side of the plane alternate from 1 to 2 per row.

The same staggered Business Class layout is also installed on Brussels Airlines’ A330, Finnair’s A330/A340, SWISS’ A340/A330, Delta’s B767, and American’s B767 aircrafts. This configuration offers some degree of privacy as none of the seat rows quite line up, so nobody is directly looking into the seat across the aisle. But nonetheless, the privacy in this type of Business Class cabin is inferior compared to the fully enclosed Business Class suites that you find on other airlines, such as Qatar’s A350s, British Airways’ reconfigured Boeing 777s, or Delta’s A350s (and which seem to become the standard in the industry).

3. BUSINESS CLASS SEAT (+ BEST & WORST SEATS)

All Business Class seats onboard Edelweiss’ Airbus A340 aircraft feature the same dimensions: they have a pitch of 152 cm (60 inches), a width of 50 cm (19,5 inch), and a recline of 180 degree. All seats have at least one large work surface on the side (where you can set up your laptop), with some single seats and some paired seats featuring this work space on both sides (a so-called ‘throne seat’). One side of the seat features a power port with international adapters, a reading lamp (at eye level), a panel for the seat controls, and a standard wired handset (located below a flap in the armrest). The console on this side of the seat also holds the fold-out tray table, which is released at the push of a button. In front of the seat is a HD entertainment screen (more on that below) with a foot compartment underneath.

The seat can be transformed in a Lantal air-cushion bed with a length of 2 m (6.5 ft). Although it’s a 180 degree recline, the seat and your lower legs descend into a space carved out for it in the seat(s) in front, below the entertainment screen. This foot compartment is quite narrow, making it hard to switch position during your sleep while not waking up, as your legs might often hit the walls. The seats that do not have the ‘throne’ feature have more space for the feet, hence making them a little more comfortable for sleeping. In its lie flat position, the Business Class seat is just 45 cm (17 inch) above the floor, making it feel like you are resting on the ground or in a coffin (because of the high seat walls), and making it uncomfortable getting in and out to go to the restroom.

What are the best Business Class seats on Edelweiss Air’s A340s?

  • The single best seats for solo travelers are the single seats on the left side of the plane, which feature a large work space on each side of the seat (so called ‘throne seats’): 11A, 14A, and 16A.
  • The single seats on the right side of the plane are a great option as well for solo travelers, but they feel less private since they only feature one instead of two work spaces on the side. These seats have the largest foot compartment and are best for sleep comfort.
  • Travel companions should go for the paired, middle seats, which all have direct aisle access. There are also paired window seats in rows 12, 15 and 17 on the left side of the plane, but the passenger in the window seat will have to jump over their neighbor’s feet to get access to aisle.

What are the worst Business Class seats

  • I suggest to avoid the seats in the first row (row 11) of the Business Class cabin since the proximity to the galley may be bothersome.
  • I also suggest to avoid the seats in the last row (row 17),  since these seats are directly in front of the Economy Class bassinet seats (so you may end up being close to young children or babies).
  • The window seats in row 15 are missing a window and thus best avoided.

4. AMENITIES & BEDDING

Edelweiss Air provides the following amenities to its Business Class passengers:

  • An amenity kit, whose packaging is made of cardboard with 70% recycled content. The kit contains basic amenities, such as socks, sleeping mask, shoehorn, toothbrush, toothpaste, earplug (toiletries are not provided).
  • A decently sized pillow
  • A comfortable, warm blanket
  • Noise cancelling headphones (you cannot keep them as the crew collects them before landing)

5. MEALS

On this flight, a three course lunch (after takeoff) and light dinner (prior to landing) were served. Overall, the food service was rather disappointing and uninspiring for a Business Class product: the food portions were small and the meals had a mediocre taste at best. The food service of leisure airline Edelweiss Air is definitely not en pair with that of Switzerland’s legacy airline SWISS.

Dinner service started with a drink, served with a bag of mixed nuts. Next, I had the following selection from the menu for lunch:

  • Starter: smoked salmon
  • Main course: panseared grouper fish, tarragon sauce, garlic pilaf rice and vegetables
  • Cheese platter: a selection of Swiss cheeses

A light dinner – chicken salad – was served 90 minutes prior to landing.

6. ENTERTAINMENT

Each Business Class seat comes with a private 15 inches HD TV screen. The inflight entertainment (IFE) is selected by directly touching the TV but can also be navigated by using a handheld and wired remote control. Edelweiss Air’s IFE features dozens of movies & TV shows, including the latest blockbusters, award-winning documentaries & popular TV series. There’s also a wide range of music channels and over 400 different CDs to choose from.

Monday newsletters always feature top 10 travel lists to inspire.

Over the past weeks, I published several top 10 lists (as well as resort reviews) related to one of the most beautiful destinations on earth, the Maldives:

Today: Top 10 best resorts the Maldives for snorkeling

The Maldives stand head and shoulders above any other destination on earth when it comes to snorkeling. Most resorts feature a so-called ‘house reef’ close to their shores, where the shallow lagoon precipitously drops off into the deeper ocean waters. The house reef is that area close to the vertical drop off where the coral begins to aggregate in a kind of coral garden teeming with marine life and colorful fish. The shallow water enclosed by the house reef also serves as a large natural swimming pool and protects swimmers from the ocean waves and strong tidal currents outside the reef. Snorkeling in the waters off the Maldivian islands can bring you face to face with everything from surgeon fish, tuna, and parrot fish, to eagle rays, turtles and even hammerhead sharks. However, the quality of the house reef differs from resort to resort, and to help you, I have compiled a list of the best house reefs in the Maldives.

There is more information (with reviews and Youtube clips) below the slideshow. Think I missed one? Share your favorite house reef in the Maldives in the comments section.

10. BAROS

On a small private island in the middle of the Indian Ocean sits Baros Maldives, a heavenly Eden overlooking a glistening blue lagoon that will exceed your highest fantasy-island expectations. Elegant and secluded villas – 75 in total – with palm thatched roofs are either over water or facing the beach while a PADI diving centre, a spa with a tranquil water garden, several restaurants overlooking the sea and gentle sea breezes all ensure an unforgettable holiday. This romantic, luxury Maldives resort is especially renowned for its spectacular house reef so close to the shore that it can be explored by beginners as well as experts.

The 5-star resort provides a cutting edge and contemporary lifestyle experience above and below the ocean. The property features 77 luxurious private escapes – each with its own plunge pool and sundeck. W Maldives ignites an obsessive desire to soak it in, live it up, and hit repeat. Whatever/Whenever. The resort also harbors one of the best house reef of the Maldives, where you can swim with reef sharks and turtles just outside your retreat.

8. SIX SENSES LAAMU

Six Senses Laamu is the only resort in the Laamu Atoll, deep in the Indian Ocean. Just an inter-island plane trip from Malé International Airport and a short boat ride brings you to a place where dolphins swim. This eco-friendly hideaway is a surfer’s haven, with Yin Yang – the archipelago’s most famous wave break – located just offshore. The 97 rustically stylish villas, scattered about the beach and over the lagoon, feature upper decks to fully appreciate the panorama. Cocoon yourself in a treatment nest at the holistic Six Senses Spa. Today: Get complimentary VIP perks at any Soneva Resort

As most of you know, I am a huge fan of luxury hotels (and I assume most of you are as well since you are following my blog). Aman, Mandarin Oriental, Rosewood and Four Seasons rank among my favorite hotel brands. But none comes close to my absolute favorite hotel group in the world: Soneva. What I like so much about the Soneva – and how they discriminate themselves from their high-end competitors – is their pursuit for excellence, the unique design of their resorts, their commitment to inspired living, their very smart take on barefoot luxury, their breathtaking ‘remote but accessible’ natural locations, and their creation of authentic experiences (unlike any other). Soneva has four spectacular resorts so far (with more exciting properties planned to open in the near future):

SONEVA JANI, MALDIVES
SONEVA JANI, MALDIVES

I am able to offer the readers of my blog complimentary VIP perks at any Soneva resort (for new bookings made before August 2024). These benefits are listed below and come in addition to valuable offers & savings which are found on the official Soneva FushiSoneva Jani, and Soneva Kiri website:

  • resort credit valued at 10% of the net room revenue (when booking a Best Available Rate) or 5% of the total package revenue when booking one of the Soneva special packages. For example, if you book 7 nights at Soneva Kiri at a best available rate of $1500 USD per night, you will get a resort credit of 7 x $150 USD = $910 USD, which you can use on food, spa, and activities.
  • Two personalized Soneva experiences per stay (complimentary) from the Soneva experience brochure (excluding Soneva In Aqua). You have the opportunity to select premium activities such as Sonu’s picnic which is approximately $1050 USD per person. For example, at Soneva Jani, these experiences may also include:
    • Private Cinema Paradiso experience with dinner
    • Father & son picnic and mother & daughter spa
    • Private Dinner at the Starlight Table and a session at the observatory
    • Cooking class for children and family
    • Sunrise breakfast
    • Gourmet dining experience which includes chocolate and wine tasting

This is how it works:

  • Step 1contact me by email before confirming a booking (with mention of you preferred travel dates, the number of people in your travel party, and age of kids if any). I will then introduce you per email to my Soneva contact.
  • Step 2: after the introduction, Soneva will offer you the best rates or package for your preferred travel dates, and the Soneva ambassador benefits will be added to your reservation upon confirmation of the booking.

Below you find some extra information about the history of Soneva and the details (+ my reviews) of the group’s stunningly beautiful resorts.

SONEVA JANI, MALDIVES

Located on an uninhabited five-island cluster in the Noonu Atoll, the Maldives’ most exclusive resort is fringed by pristine beaches, blanketed with lush tropical greenery, and surrounded by a 5.6 km (3,4 mi) lagoon of crystal clear waters with uninterrupted Indian Ocean views. Each one of the phenomenal water villas has a private lap pool and opens to its own stretch of lagoon, with some villas featuring slides going directly from the top deck into the lagoon below. The highlight of the villas is the retractable roof in the master bedroom, which slides back at the touch of a button so that guests can lie in bed and stargaze. A few months ago, Soneva Jani added Chapter Two to its portfolio of luxurious water villas, and introduced exciting new dining concepts, an overwater Soneva Wellness Center, and a whole new all-inclusive way to experience the best of the resort with Soneva Unlimited.

SONEVA FUSHI, MALDIVES

Soneva Fushi, the first ‘Robinson Crusoe’ style hideaway in the Maldives, is set on the privately owned tropical island of Kunfunadhoo in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The island – which is 1,400 m (4,600 ft) long and 400 m (1300 ft) wide – ranks among the largest islands in the Maldives. Apart from the crystal clear waters, white beaches and tropical climate, the island’s unusually rich vegetation offers a unique natural experience. Massive, multi-bedroom, fairytale-like luxury villas and private residences are hidden among dense tropical foliage. In keeping with the castaway theme, many are built to resemble tree houses. All open to their own private stretch of sugar white sands, and most boast their own private seawater swimming pools. In summer 2020, Soneva Fushi also unveiled eight fabulous water retreats, which are the largest and most luxurious overwater villas in the world.

SONEVA KIRI, THAILAND

Remote yet accessible by a 70 minute flight from Bangkok on the resort’s private plane, Soneva Kiri sits on Thailand’s 4th largest but least populated island, Koh Kood, in the Gulf of Siam. One of the most exclusive beach resorts in the world, Soneva Kiri offers an unrivalled combination of luxury, environmentally friendly design and unforgettable, authentic Thai experiences. The 35 resort villas (including 11 private residences) are amongst the largest in the world. Located on the idyllic beach or sunny slopes in the rainforest, all have stunning infinity pools, impossibly chic furnishings, personal electric buggies, and impeccable service courtesy of private butlers. Highlights include the open air cinema Paradiso, Benz’ mangrove restaurant, the chocolate & ice cream parlour, the children’s den, and the spectacular Treetop dining pod.

SONEVA IN AQUA, MALDIVES

Soneva in Aqua is the first floating villa in the Maldives and every honeymooner’s dream. The pioneering new boat villa concept of the ultra luxe Soneva hotel group combines all the benefits of the group’s iconic resort’s services and amenities with the freedom and exclusivity associated with a private boat charter. The two-cabin boat features a spacious main cabin with a glass bottom spa and shower facilities, as well as a second room with a king-sized bed and en-suite facilities. Other features include an external raised sun and dining deck, a lower level bar and dining area plus daybeds, lounge seating and a jacuzzi.

HISTORY OF THE SONEVA HOTEL GROUP

In 1995, Sonu Shivdasani, an Indian-British hotelier, launched the now world-famous Soneva Fushi resort on the deserted Maldivian island of Kunfunadhoo. He also built his house there, together with his wife Eva Malmstrom, a Swedish fashion model, who developed the design and furnishing of the unique resort.

They had no idea that their intensely personal vision of a locally crafted villa and environmentally responsible lifestyle would form the basis of a successful collection of world-class hotels, resorts and spas. But that’s exactly what happened. Soneva Fushi was the first ‘castaway’ resort in the Maldives, pioneering a trend for back-to-nature luxury holidays. And it still tops my list of the top 10 best luxury resorts in the Maldives. In 2009, the Soneva Hotel group built a second, even more spectacular hotel – Soneva Kiri – on the unspoilt Thai island of Koh. Last year, the group launched the first floating villa in the Maldives, SonevaIn Aqua. And this autumn, it opens Soneva Jani, a spectacular resort that will set new standards in this destination that is already known for its world-class hotel standards.

The success of the Soneva brand also paved the way for Sonu and Eva’s other hotel group, the Six Senses Resorts & Spas, across South East Asia and Europe. In 2006, Soneva Fushi made a revenue of approximately US$ 20 million and by 2011, Six Senses was a $150–175 million international luxury spa and resort chain with 26 resorts and 41 spas. Under Eva’s and Sonu’s direction the Six Senses brand gained global fame before being sold in 2012.

Today, Sonu and Eva focus on their Soneva resorts with private residences, as part of the “One Owner, One Operator, One Philosophy, One Brand” strategy. And while the Sonevas may have many imitators, they have no equals. Both Soneva Resorts impress on a wide range of levels. Breathtaking ‘remote but accessible’ natural locations, effortlessly chic accommodation, incredible food, truly memorable activities, an inspiring ethos of sustainability and service that is uncannily intuitive.
