Today: Air India gets makeover with a new logo, aircraft livery and cabins

Air India – a Star Alliance member – is the flag carrier of India. It’s the second largest carrier in India (after IndiGo) but it remains the largest international carrier out of India with an 18.6% market share. The airline was founded by J. R. D. Tata – an Indian aviator, industrialist, entrepreneur and chairman of Tata Group – as Tata Airlines in 1932; Tata himself flew its first single-engine de Havilland Puss Moth, carrying air mail from Karachi’s Drigh Road Aerodrome to Bombay’s Juhu aerodrome. In 1953, Air India was taken over by the government, but in 2021, the Tatas paid nearly $ 3 billion USD to buy the carrier back. Air India returned to its founders with record losses and a reputation severely dented – bad customer service, frequent delays and cancellations, and nightmarish experiences by passengers. This week, the Tata Group unveiled its new plans for Air India, which demonstrate some serious ambitions for a complete turnaround and a possible bright future.

In this article:

What do you think about Air India’s new identity, livery and cabins? Leave a comment.

AIR INDIA MAKEOVER

NEW BRAND IDENTITY, LOGO & AIRCRAFT LIVERY

Air India unveiled a new brand identity and aircraft livery as the airline moves ahead with its transformation plan since being taken over by Tata Group more than one-and-a-half years ago. The new look re-imagines the iconic Indian window shape, historically used by Air India, into a gold window frame that becomes central to the new brand design system. It symbolises a ‘Window of Possibilities’, according to a press release.

AIR INDIA NEW LIVERY

The logo of Air India that it used since 2014 showed a red swan with the orange Konark Chakra image on it. The airline’s new logo symbol ‘The Vista’ is inspired by the peak of the gold window frame, signifying limitless possibilities, progressiveness, and the airline’s bold, confident outlook for the future, it said in a release. The airline said the new aircraft livery and design features a palette of deep red, aubergine, purple and gold highlights as well as a chakra-inspired pattern. While red and white are Air India’s colors, the purple is taken from the livery of the airline Vistara. “It also boasts a striking new custom-made ‘Air India Sans’ font, marrying confidence with warmth to position Air India as premium, inclusive, and accessible,” the release said.

The new brand identity has been designed in partnership with the brand transformation company FutureBrand. Travelers will begin to see the new logo throughout their journey starting December 2023, when the airline’s first A350 enters the fleet in the new livery, according to the airline.

NEW GUEST EXPERIENCES

In addition to a new brand identity , Air India is also making significant investments throughout the guest experience to elevate its service and to strengthening its position as the preferred airline for travellers flying to, from, and within India:

  • The carrier has confirmed historic purchase agreements to acquire 470 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing at around $70 billion USD (based on published list prices), with deliveries of the new aircraft starting November this year. Air India’s firm orders include 34 A350-1000, six A350-900, 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 10 Boeing 777X widebody aircraft, as well as 140 Airbus A320neo, 70 Airbus A321neo and 190 Boeing 737MAX narrowbody aircraft.
  • Air India has launched its all-new inflight magazine, namaste.ai, which is now available on board all Air India domestic and international flights. A premium travel and lifestyle magazine, it reflects Air India’s vision of becoming a worldclass global airline with an Indian heart.
  • Air India has launched a new website and mobile app, offering a significantly improved web experience with new digital tools and features.
  • The carrier will also launch a new “open all hours, every day” customer contact center in nine Indian and foreign languages by the end of this year, as well as a completely redesigned loyalty program in early 2024 that will enable thousands of new redemption possibilities.
  • The airline is investing in building completely new lounges at Delhi and New York JFK airports, having recently announced a global lounge network expansion, achieving 100 per cent lounge access coverage for premium customers at all destinations in its international route network.
  • Air India has now welcomed more than 5,000 new staff, including 3,200 cabin crew and nearly 1,000 cockpit crew, who are helping to drive the cultural transformation taking place at the heart of the airline. It is also heavily investing in building one of the world’s largest aviation training academies in India that will upskill a massive number of aviation professionals.

NEW FIRST & BUSINESS CLASS CABINS

Last but not least, Air India is installing new First, Business and Economy Class cabins on its airplanes. The transformation of its fleet has already begun with the airline leasing and buying 20 widebody aircraft this year. A $ 400 billion USD program to completely refurbish the interiors of its legacy fleet of 43 widebody aircraft commences mid-2024, which will lead to the installation of brand-new seats in every cabin, new inflight entertainment systems, and inflight Wi-Fi internet connectivity. By March 2024, one third of the airline’s widebody fleet will be upgraded, and over the next two-and-a-half years, its entire long-haul fleet will be reborn. Air India released a short video, which showcases the new cabins of the carrier’s reconfigured Boeing 777 aircraft (watch below):

The video reveals the following facts about Air India’s new Boeing 777 interiors:

  • The First Class cabin will be a single row of suites arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration. Each suite will be fully flat and will have a door.
  • The Business Class seats will be arranged in a staggered 1-2-1 configuration. The fully flat seats will have direct aisle access and a privacy door.
  • The airline will install a Premium Economy Class product on its long haul fleet, with the seats arranged in a 2-4-2 layout.

Today: July 2023 luxury travel news

Every last Friday of the month, you can read my news round-up of what’s happening in the world of luxury travel. In this issue:

  1. The superjumbo returns: Etihad Airways’ Airbus A380 returns to the sky
  2. Virgin Atlantic plans to operate the first transatlantic flight using 100% SAF
  3. MGM Resorts will join Marriott’s loyalty program
  4. The Ritz-Carlton debuts in Fukuoka, Japan
  5. COMO Hotels will open a property in Singapore next month
  6. W Hotels debuts in Budapest, Hungary
  7. The Rome EDITION is now open
  8. Mandarin Oriental announces a new hotel in Miami, USA
  9. One&Only One Za’abeel Dubai is now accepting reservations
  10. Air New Zealand is serving the flavors of Aotearoa in a new onboard menu

1. The superjumbo returns: Etihad Airways’ Airbus A380 returns to the sky

Etihad Airways, the award-winning national airline of the United Arab Emirates, celebrated the return to service of its Airbus A380 on its popular route between Abu Dhabi and London Heathrow. Etihad’s A380 Economy cabin features 68 Economy Space seats offering an additional 4 inches in leg room, and 337 Economy Smart seats that come with Etihad’s signature fixed-wing headrest and large pillows for added comfort. There are 70 Business Studios available on Etihad’s A380 upper deck, granting privacy to customers and creating a serene atmosphere. On the upper deck, guests can also enjoy access to The Lobby, a serviced lounge and bar area located between the First and Business Class cabins. Guests can choose from nine First Apartments featuring a private living space with exquisite amenities and designer tableware, a wide leather lounge chair and a separate ottoman which converts into a lie-flat bed. First Class guests can freshen up in the comfort of the Apartment with personal vanity units, as well as take advantage of the First Class shower room (read my review here). The A380 is also home to the Residence, the world’s only three-room suite in the sky with guests able to enjoy service and hospitality from a dedicated team of Etihad cabin crew. Available to book for up to two guests, The Residence features a private living room, bedroom and ensuite bathroom where guests can refresh in a shower at 40,000ft.

2. Virgin Atlantic plans to operate the first transatlantic  flight using 100% SAF

Virgin Atlantic and Rolls-Royce performed a successful Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blend ground test on the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine. The test marks a key milestone in the project which will see the world’s first 100% SAF flight travel across the Atlantic Ocean from London Heathrow to New York JFK on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, set to take off on 28 November 2023. SAF typically delivers CO2 lifecycle emissions savings of more than 70% whilst performing like the traditional jet fuel it replaces. SAF has a fundamental role to play in aviation’s decarbonisation and pathway to Net Zero 2050. Today, SAF represents less than 0.1% of jet fuel volumes and fuel standards allow for just a 50% SAF blend in commercial jet engines. The one-off Virgin Atlantic flight in November will demonstrate the potential of SAF as a 100% drop-in replacement for fossil fuel today. Shai Weiss, CEO, Virgin Atlantic, commented: “The 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel transatlantic flight will be a historic moment in aviation’s roadmap to decarbonisation. Alongside fleet transformation, SAF is the most readily available way for our industry to decarbonise.”

3. MGM Resorts will join Marriott’s loyalty program

Marriott and MGM Resorts announced an exclusive long-term strategic licensing agreement and the creation of MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, which will launch in October 2023, and encompass 17 of MGM’s resorts, representing more than 40,000 rooms in Las Vegas and other cities across the USA. Of the 17 MGM resorts that will join MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, four properties will also be affiliated with existing Marriott collection brands: Bellagio Resort & Casino will join The Luxury Collection, ARIA Resort & Casino will join Autograph Collection, Park MGM will become part of Tribute Portfolio, and The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas will continue its affiliation with Autograph Collection. Eight MGM resorts in Las Vegas will join MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy: Vdara Hotel & Spa, MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, NoMad Las Vegas, The Signature at MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, New York-New York Hotel & Casino, Luxor Hotel and Casino, and Excalibur Hotel & Casino. Five MGM Resorts in other USA locations will also join MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy: Borgata (Atlantic City, New Jersey), Beau Rivage (Biloxi, Mississippi), MGM Grand Detroit (Michigan), MGM National Harbor (Maryland), and MGM Springfield (Massachusetts).

4. The Ritz-Carlton debuts in Fukuoka, Japan

The Ritz-Carlton, part of Marriott’s portfolio of 31 hotel brands, announced the opening of The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka on the island of Kyushu in Southern Japan. Rising above Fukuoka, the luxury hotel is situated within the 364 ft (111 m) main tower of Fukuoka Daimyo Garden City, the tallest urban lifestyle complex in the city’s core commercial district. Overseen by Melbourne-based Layan Architects + Designers, the hotel’s interior design and art take inspiration from Fukuoka’s traditional yarn-dyed silk and kimono weaving craft, called “Hakata-ori”. The hotel features 167 generously sized guestrooms (including 20 suites), four restaurants, two bars, and a spa with indoor pool. The Ritz-Carlton, Fukuoka brings the brand’s famous service and contemporary aesthetic to one of Japan’s fastest growing cities famous for its thriving start-up scene as well as for its enduring history, traditions, and outstanding culinary culture. Fukuoka was once a key waypoint of Silk Road trade routes, and today the city remains a major gateway between Japan and the rest of Asia. The destination is famous for its annual festivals, such as the 800-year old Hakata Gion Yamakasa summer festival, designated by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

5. COMO Hotels will open a property in Singapore next month

Opening in successive phases, starting in September, the 156- room COMO Metropolitan Singapore will be the Group’s first hotel in its home country. The property will feature a beautiful rooftop pool and bar. The rest of the 19-floor building will include two floors of fashion retail curated by Club21 for seasonal collections and pop-up partnerships. The hotel’s spa – COMO Shambhala – aims a thoughtful, diagnostic approach to holistic wellbeing, and will offer numerous classes, workshops and multi-day wellness paths. 6. W Hotels debuts in Budapest, Hungary

W Hotels, part of Marriott, announced the highly anticipated debut of W Budapest, marking the brand’s first opening in Hungary. Housed in the historic Drechsler Palace, W Budapest is set to become an evolutionary heartbeat of the city with visionary design, eclectic gastronomy and a socially driven spirit drawn from the cosmopolitan capital. Located on Andrássy Avenue, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city’s most luxurious shopping street, W Budapest features 151 stylish guestrooms and suites as well as three innovative dining concepts, all influenced by Budapest’s rich history, creativity and diversity. Interior designers Bowler James Brindley (London) and Bánáti + Hartvig (Hungary) have carefully restored and reimagined Drechsler Palace, drawing inspiration from its rich cultural history and multiple identities as a café, social hub and Hungarian State Ballet Academy, to create captivating design narratives. From soft layering to the use of metallic meshing to create perspective and intrigue throughout the hotel’s public spaces and guestrooms, the design concept has created spaces that reveal new depths each time they are experienced. Further inspiration has been sourced from the grand French Renaissance architectural aesthetic throughout the city, leading to a spirited modernization with color palettes of green, coral and deep blues and paired with contemporary Zsolnay inspire tiles, stained glass features and jewelry-inspired light fittings.

Inspired by the rich heritage and diverse bounty of New Zealand, the new menu brings together indigenous flavors and contemporary cuisine. The new menu is onboard Business Premier cabins now, and is available on all long haul flights out of New Zealand. Air New Zealand Chief Customer and Sales Officer Leanne Geraghty says the new onboard food and beverage offering was inspired by manaakitanga – the Māori tradition of hospitality – and is a true celebration of Aotearoa New Zealand’s incredible culinary heritage.”There’s something truly magical about the native flavours of New Zealand – from the peppery spiciness of horopito to the earthy goodness of kawakawa. 1. Soneva is counting down to the opening of its third Maldives resort: Soneva Secret
  2. Iraqi Airways celebrates delivery of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner
  3. Six Senses announces a new resort in Saudi Arabia

1. Soneva is counting down to the opening of third Maldives resort: Soneva Secret

Sonu Shivdasani, CEO of Soneva (my favorite hotel brand in the world), confirmed during a webinar that the brand’s third property in the Maldives will open by the end of this year. Although the Soneva group is tight-lipped about its new resort – which currently goes by the name Soneva Secret – some details about the new property have emerged and Soneva has installed a count-down clock on its website, building anticipation among luxury travelers and avid fans of the brand (including myself). Located in the north of the Maldives, the new resort will offer a remote and highly private experience, catering to those seeking a personalized getaway. With an estimated cost of $40 million USD, the property will feature a collection of 17 luxurious villas and residences, designed to celebrate the beauty of nature. Each villa at Soneva Secret was built at a cost exceeding $3 million USD, showcasing the brand’s commitment to providing a truly lavish experience for its guests. Soneva currently operates three properties in the Maldives, namely Soneva Fushi, Soneva in Aqua (the company’s chartered yacht), and Soneva Jani. The brand has also established a presence in Koh Kood, Thailand, with Soneva Kiri. Plans for future Soneva Resorts include the opening of a fourth Soneva Maldives, a second resort in Thailand, and a debut in Japan, specifically in Okinawa.

2. Iraqi Airways celebrates delivery of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Boeing and Iraqi Airways celebrated the delivery of the airline’s first Boeing 787 Dreamliner with a special event in Baghdad to welcome the flag-carrier’s super-efficient widebody jet. The Iraqi flag carrier has taken the first of 10 787s on order, to profitably grow its long-haul network and connect Iraq to more international destinations. The delivery of Iraqi Airways’ first 787 follows delivery of four Boeing 737 MAX airplanes since February. The airline has ordered a total of six 737-8s and 10 737-10s, providing its single-aisle fleet with more capability across its regional and medium-haul routes. Iraqi Airways currently serves more than 50 destinations from Baghdad and is expanding and renewing its fleet to support the anticipated increase in international business and leisure travel to and from the country. Iraq is seeing increased stability and economic growth, with the country’s annual gross domestic product growth rate expected to reach 7% by the end of 2023. With global air traffic rebounding, Middle Eastern airlines are seeing more than a 40% traffic increase compared to last year.

3. Ritz-Carlton Reserve debuts in Jiuzhaigou, China

Rissai Valley, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, has opened in Jiuzhaigou, a valley on the edges of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau in China’s Southwestern Sichuan province. The region is an area of exceptional natural beauty with spectacular alpine mountains soaring above a fairyland of forests, lakes, and waterfalls, and has been inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and World Biosphere Reserve. Rissai Valley’s intimate 87 villas offer magnificent views of the snow-capped Minshan mountain range, forests, and ancient Tibetan villages. U.S.-based architectural firm WATG paid homage to the natural surroundings and Tibetan heritage with the use of traditional building forms and locally-sourced materials. The elegant interiors were designed by the late Indonesian interior design legend Jaya Ibrahim, who curated palettes of forest greens, emeralds, and icy blues to mirror the jewel-colored lakes and waterfalls of Jiuzhaigou, while celebrating the culture and heritage of the local villages with examples of artisanal Tibetan craftsmanship throughout the property. The property – which is part of Marriott‘s hotel portfolio – features three unique restaurants and a holistic spa.

4. JetBlue introduces a new bold all-blue livery

JetBlue announced its new standard livery featuring a bold and all-blue design, giving the carrier a standout visual design as it expands to new markets and brings customer-centric offerings across the travel industry. The new livery design builds on JetBlue’s heritage and unique personality with energized favorite elements for a new era, such as:

  • A blue allover fuselage that goes all-in on the company’s namesake color.
  • Iconic tailfin patterns now energized and extended to embrace the body and belly of the aircraft.
  • A larger JetBlue logo to represent the bold impact these aircraft have in the industry.
  • Colorful winglets that add an extra pop of fun with a refreshed palette of accent colors.
  • The aircraft’s pattern and the JetBlue logo featured on the belly, making it instantly recognizable to plane-spotters.

The bright, colorful elements featured in the new livery design are also echoed in JetBlue’s new visual brand identity that rolled out on digital assets and social platforms earlier this year. As the company’s first brand refresh in a decade, the new colors and designs reflect a more joyful, contemporary and digital-first appearance. From the outside to the inside, each touchpoint in the JetBlue experience has been thoughtfully created to honor its storied identity while signaling its bold moves to bring disruptive, customer-focused impact to new markets.

5. Riyadh Air unveils its stunning livery

A new chapter in air travel is taking the skies with Saudi Arabia’s new mega airline “Riyadh Air”. The carrier’s first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and its striking livery was revealed in Riyadh on June 12th marking a national celebration of the new carrier. The ceremony was attended by highnesses, excellencies and official dignitaries. The aircraft flew on low altitude over several notable landmarks in the Riyadh skyline, including KAFD, Boulevard city and some of the iconic main towers, thrilling residents with a glimpse of their new airline while sharing the pride of seeing the new national carrier in the Kingdom. The aircraft also made its public debut on June 19th at the 54th Paris Air Show as part of Riyadh Air’s first appearance to global audiences. The livery – and brand identity – of Riyadh Air reflects the modern and forward-thinking theme from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Inspired by the vibrant lavender colors that carpet the desert in the spring, the beautiful livery is one of a series which will continue to push boundaries in aviation. It has been designed to incorporate visual references to the Kingdom and the city which include the sweeping curves of Arabic script with the global campaign tagline ‘The Future Takes Flight’.

6. Iberia upgrades its inflight dining service

Spain’s flag carrier Iberia redesigned its in-flight meals globally with the help of its catering provider, DO & CO. The latter company worked to improve the quality of the menu designs in all cabins and flights, maintaining the essence of Spanish cuisine and products.  The airline renewed its proposal for Economy and Economy Plus on long-haul flights, improving current services and adding new ones, such as a ”movie snack”. On flights less than 10.5 hours from Madrid, a Magnum Choc Ice is offered, while a cookie is provided during flights to Madrid. On longer flights originating from Madrid, a tapas bag service is offered, which includes a selection of cold cuts, bread sticks and olives (a vegetarian version is also available). On return flights, passengers will be served sandwiches and, on night flights, crackers and cookies. Improvements continue in Business Class, where the snack service is updated with new healthy products, such as fruit baskets, and hot and cold sandwiches. The service before landing has also been improved, with additional products, depending on the arrival time of the flight, such as hot and cold sweet and savory dishes, in addition to the Iberia signature omelette for breakfast.

7. Six Senses announces a new resort in Saudi Arabia

Set to open in 2026, Six Senses Amaala will feature 64 rooms, six suites, 30 villas, and 25 branded residences, designed by architects U+A and interiors by Studio Carter. They will be located on one of the most dramatic landforms along Saudi Arabia’s Amaala’s Triple Bay area, offering panoramic views across the Hijaz Cove to the Red Sea. The meandering streets and paths that crisscross the site will lead to enchanting plazas with glimpses of the Pura Cove and its iridescent blue lagoons. The central feature of the site is the dramatic Mesa, featuring spectacular overhangs and caves. Eons of wind and water erosion have scored the limestone to reveal fossilized corals and mollusks that stand testimony to the ancient history of this land. To the north, the resort will open onto the long sweeping beaches of Hijaz Cove, home to a beach restaurant, family pool, and branded residences. To the south, the resort will lead around the point to natural rock pools, pocket beaches, and a mangrove boardwalk to access the spa, which will set up home in a private cove.

Mandarin Oriental, Athens will be located on the shoreline of the city and just a 15-minute drive from the center. The hotel and residences are set to open in the summer of 2027, within The Ellinikon. 10. KLM introduces Boeing 777 Business Class seat with sliding door

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has introduced new World Business Class seats on its Boeing 777 fleet. These broader seats have a sliding door ensuring greater comfort and privacy. Thanks to various innovations, the seats and their fittings are 10-15% lighter than other Business Class seats in this market segment, thereby contributing to KLM’s sustainability objectives. KLM’s new World Business Class (WBC) seats were designed on the basis of extensive customer research. For its new Business Class, KLM opted to install Jamco Venture seats in a 1-2-1 configuration, giving all passengers direct access to the aisle. These Jamco Venture seats were previously installed in World Business Class aboard KLM’s Boeing 787 fleet. Following extensive customer research, KLM teamed up with the manufacturer to further improve the seat. The full JAMCO design, conceived in collaboration with KLM, particularly the personal cabin layout, is lighter than the previous setup, without detracting from quality. Lighter seats contribute to KLM’s sustainability objectives. KLM’s entire Boeing 777-300 and 200 fleet will be fitted with the new World Business Class seats. The full revamp will be completed during the course of the coming year.

1. Hawaiian Airlines unveils its new Business Class

Hawaiian Airlines, Hawaiʻi’s hometown carrier since 1929, has unveiled the interior of its new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. Guests onboard Hawaiian’s 787 – entering service beginning early next year on select routes – will be immersed in cabin design elements that evoke Hawaiʻi’s rich natural world through bold textures, island-inspired sunrise and sunset lighting and sinuous ocean and wind patterns. Hawaiian’s 300-seat 787 features its newest premium product, Leihōkū (garland of stars): 34 suites that envelop guests in a tranquil, elegant space with fully lie-flat seating, an 18-inch in-flight entertainment screen, personal outlets, wireless charging and direct aisle access. Set in a 1-2-1 configuration with doors, the suites can offer privacy or a shared experience, with combined double seats allowing couples to fall asleep while gazing at a starlit ceiling. Each design element of Hawaiian’s 787 thoughtfully celebrates Polynesian navigators who sailed the Pacific by observing the stars, sun, winds, waves and wildlife. The airline worked with design consultant Teague to realize Hawaiian’s vision of honoring Pacific navigation in a modern aircraft.

Located in the idyllic Lakeshore East neighborhood, The St. Regis Chicago offers easy access to the Chicago River and is a short walk from the city’s leading luxury retailers, dining destinations, and notable cultural landmarks such as Millennium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the famed Magnificent Mile. The skyscraper features a unique and distinctive design composed of an interconnected series of stacked, frustum-shapes that move rhythmically in and out of plane and extend to various heights. Throughout the hotel’s public areas, metallic materials and colors, such as copper and rust, are interwoven with geometric, angular lines, offering a nod to The Great Chicago Fire and the city’s geographic interconnectivity of waterways, buildings, and green spaces. The property features 159 luxurious guestrooms and 33 exquisite suites across 11 floors, as well as several high-end dining outlets, spa, gym, meetings rooms and a palatial, heated indoor pool.

8. Saudi Arabian Airlines launches a new Business Class seat

Saudi Arabian Airlines (SAUDIA) has unveiled its latest state-of-the-art business seat, which will be fitted on the airline’s new Airbus A321 XLR aircraft. 9. South African Airways will resume longhaul flights

South African Airways announced that it has been given the green light for a significant expansion of its fleet. This paves the way for South Africa’s national carrier to relaunch international routes and increase seat capacity for its regional and domestic destinations. Interim CEO, Professor John Lamola, says the airline’s plan to lease six new aircraft has been approved by the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Public Enterprises. “The aircraft will be delivered before the end of this calendar year, and the planes include a wide-body aircraft as well as five narrow-body aircraft – all of them Airbus equipment,” Lamola said. “We are excited, as SAA, to lay the groundwork for the relaunch of our first international route since coming out of business rescue and since the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. We will announce the new route in the coming few weeks, and we will open commercial marketing and sales for it.” Lamola says the terms and conditions attached to the deals for the new aircraft are along the same competitive, transparent, and cost-effective lines that have characterised the ‘new’ SAA since it emerged from Business Rescue in September 2021.

10. Six Senses announces its first resort in Greece

Six Senses‘ first Greek resort will be located on a southerly white-sand cove on Megalonisos, one of the 10 Petalioi islands and islets with some of the finest undiscovered beaches in the “Greek Maldives”. Six Senses Megalonisos will be a short boat ride from the port of Rafina, just across the mainland from Athens, or Marmari on Evia’s West coast. Whereas the island of Evia or Euboea was said to have been separated from mainland Greece by a strike from Poseidon’s trident, the childhood home of Goddess Hera, and the battleground for the Titans versus the Giants, the tranquil and secluded Megalonisos has been left by history and mythology to snooze in the sun. There will be 75 guest villas and 20 branded residences for sale, all unobtrusively blending into the contours of the bay. The three restaurants will include all-day dining, a beach bar and grill, and a specialty sunset bar. There will also be a pastry café, perfect for a coffee after a morning dip or sun salutation, along with a boutique. A Six Senses Spa will offer multiple treatment rooms, including four double sensory suites, a Watsu for a range of hydro therapies, and a Hammam for a warm herbal steam and body scrub.

Today: Soneva Fushi will host two exceptional festivals in the Maldives

Soneva Fushi, the famous ‘Robinson Crusoe’ style hideaway in the Maldives and one of my favorite resorts in the world, will host two exceptional festivals in the coming months, one catering to literature aficionados and the other one to wellness enthusiasts:

  • JLF Soneva Fushi (May 12-21, 2023): following the dazzling celebration that took place on the shores of Soneva Fushi in 2022, Soneva has once again joined forces with Teamwork Arts, producer of the iconic Jaipur Literature Festival, to launch the second edition of JLF Soneva Fushi. A truly bespoke experience, JLF Soneva Fushi is a rare opportunity to reconnect with the joys of live performances of art, music and literature on the idyllic island of Kunfunadhoo in the beautiful Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
  • SOUL Wellness festival (September 29-October 8): over the course of ten days and two weekends, the intimate festival will invite guests from across the world to explore wellness in all its. soneva fushi soul wellness festival

Soneva Fushi is located in the Baa Atoll, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and a diver’s paradise. The island – which is 1,400 m (4,600 ft) long and 400 m (1300 ft) wide – ranks among the largest islands in the Maldives. Apart from the crystal clear waters, white beaches and tropical climate, the island’s unusually rich vegetation offers a unique natural experience. Massive, multi-bedroom, fairytale-like luxury villas and private residences are hidden among dense tropical foliage. In keeping with the castaway theme, many are built to resemble tree houses. All open to their own private stretch of sugar white sands, and most boast their own private seawater swimming pools. In summer 2020, Soneva Fushi also unveiled eight fabulous water retreats, which are the largest and most luxurious overwater villas in the world. Read my review of Soneva Fushi here or watch my YouTube video below.

Below is some more information about the two festivals.

1. The St Regis Kanai Resort debuts in the Riviera Maya, Mexico

Designed by Mexican architectural firm Edmonds International with interiors by Chapi Chapo Design, the St Regis Kanai Resort features an exceptional circular exterior design inspired by the constellation Pleiades, resulting in unrivaled ocean views from nearly every vantage point. Guests of the resort are immediately transported into the magic of Kanai with a multi-story open air water installation leading into the main lobby. Floor-to-ceiling panoramic views of the mangroves give way to lush gardens and an expansive outdoor lawn with direct access to 2 miles (3 km) of undisturbed white sand beach. Drawing inspiration from ancient Mayan artistic and ceremonial manifestations, the hotel’s sophisticated aesthetic features a rich palette of limestone, walnut, and layered textiles. 2. Six Senses Rome marks the launch of the brand’s first hotel in Italy

A peaceful haven nestled in the beating heart of the Eternal City, Six Senses Rome opened its doors in the historical Palazzo Salviati Cesi Mellini. The Palazzo housing Six Senses Rome is a treasure trove of wonders, from the monumental marble staircase with its decorative skylight to the newly restored 600-year-old columns in the main entrance. From Cocciopesto on the walls to the extensive presence of Travertine local stone, the reverential nod to Roman traditions is evident throughout the hotel’s 96 guest rooms and suites, with some featuring the iconic Triclinium-style marble seating on their terraces. True to the Eat With Six Senses ethos, menus foster a strong link with local culinary traditions, whether at the all-day dining BIVIUM Restaurant-Café-Bar or up high on NOTOS Rooftop. Besides the Roman Empire-inspired 5-course tasting menu, dishes include plant-based, meat, fish, and sweet classics with Sicilian touches to honor the Executive Chef’s home favorites. A sanctuary of wellness, Six Senses Spa Rome offers holistic experiences, such as the 60-minute Roman bathing circuit (a modern-day take on the ancient ritual).

3. Emirates unveils new signature livery for its fleet

The distinctive livery of the world’s largest international airline, Emirates, has undergone a refresh. Eagle-eyed plane spotters and fans will immediately notice changes to the tailfin and wingtips. In this latest design, the UAE flag on the Emirates tailfin is much more dynamic and flowing with a 3D effect artwork, and the wingtips have been painted red with the Emirates logo in Arabic calligraphy “popping” out in reverse white. Passengers onboard with a window view will see the UAE flag colors painted on the wingtips facing the fuselage. The signature gold “Emirates” lettering across the main body in English and Arabic is also bolder, and 32.5% larger. On the aircraft belly, Emirates has retained its iconic red branding which it introduced in 2005.  The website URL “Emirates.com” has been dropped from the design. The first aircraft to sport Emirates’ newest livery is A6-EOE, an Airbus A380, which has rolled out of Emirates Engineering this week after its makeover. Its first deployment will be to Munich on 17 March as flight EK51. Watch a timelapse video of the first aircraft receiving its new livery at Emirates Engineering in Dubai.

4. The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne, Australia, is now open

Soaring 80 stories above the city,  The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne brings the brand’s legendary service and contemporary aesthetic to Australia’s arts and epicurean capital. Designed by Australian architects Cottee Parker, the hotel’s stunning spaces, from the ground floor gallery to the Sky Lobby Reception on Level 80, showcase an acknowledgment of place and indigenous heritage, expressed through the beautifully curated artworks that adorn the arrival lobby walls. The interiors of the hotel, designed by BAR Studio, capture Melbourne’s unique identity with influences from its indigenous story, Victorian-era gold rush, European heritage, and fabled laneway life. The hotel’s 257 guestrooms are understated and elegant, allowing the stunning city views to take centre stage. Rooms and suites feature dark wood and simple natural stone punctuated with decorative hand-made glass panels, custom light fixtures and touches of gold. Reflecting the city’s epicurean obsessions, three distinct culinary venues sit at the heart of The Ritz-Carlton, Melbourne. For guests looking to unwind, The Ritz-Carlton Spa is an urban respite, with six treatment rooms and a stunning infinity pool providing a serene oasis from which to look out over the city.

5. Capella Sydney, Australia, is now open

After a seven-year restoration and renovation process, Capella Sydney is now open. Occupying an entire city block just moments from Circular Quay, Capella Sydney is housed within the Department of Education building, originally designed in the 1900s by NSW government architect George McRae. Forming part of the city’s prestigious Sandstone Precinct, the building has been meticulously restored and reimagined by Pontiac Land. Capella Sydney brings to the city 192 beautifully appointed guestrooms and suites, arranged across nine levels. Representing the epitome of luxury, the guestrooms and suites are replete with deluxe textiles, standalone tubs and Italian Frette linen, carrying a custom pantone and a bespoke collection of vegan, sustainable in-room amenities designed in partnership with Haeckels. On level six, guests are invited to indulge in rejuvenating treatments at Auriga Spa or swim in the heated indoor pool, designed to provide the ultimate wellness experience in the heart of the city. The Living Room, a signature space of all Capella properties, is the private ground-floor retreat for in-house guests. It’s also the place where the hotel’s culture and experience programs are conceptualised, facilitated by Culturists who are on-hand to shape the guest experience from pre-arrival to departure.

6. SWISS unveils new Business & First Class interiors

SWISS is to offer its customers a totally new and more personalized ‘SWISS Senses’ air travel experience from 2025 onwards. SWISS First and SWISS Business are being totally redesigned, while the popular SWISS Premium Economy which was introduced in 2022 will be retained. SWISS will gradually install the new cabins throughout its long-haul fleet from 2025 onwards. Its new Airbus A350-900s will be delivered with the new interior installed.

  • The new SWISS First suites offer their guests total privacy with closable sliding doors, a spacious personal wardrobe, a large seat table, seat heating and cooling, a wireless charging station and a screen display that is as wide as the suite itself. The cabin’s center suite can also be configured to suit two persons travelling together. The suites’ warm colours and wood features convey a strong sense of comfort and calm within top-quality surrounds. An advanced and spacious new washroom has also been developed for the new SWISS First cabin. The facility draws its inspiration from the famous spring in Vals in Canton Graubünden: a slate-black exterior, and a green interior that alludes to the spring’s fresh and cooling water.
  • The totally redesigned SWISS Business cabin is intentionally conceived to meet a wide range of wishes and needs. In addition to ‘classic’ Business Class seats, the new cabin offers various further seating options such as double seats for passengers traveling together. Selected seats can also be closed off with a sliding door. All the new SWISS Business seats feature seat heating and cooling and a wireless charging station. Today: Saudi Arabia formally launches a new mega airline

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is investing in tourism and aviation on a scale never seen before. Part of that involves the creation of a new national airline, which will be called Riyadh Air following an official announcement by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The new  carrier will leverage Saudi Arabia’s strategic geographic location between the three continents of Asia, Africa and Europe, enabling Saudi Arabia’s capital city Riyadh to become a gateway to the world and a global destination for transportation, trade, and tourism. Tony Douglas, former chief executive of Etihad Airways, has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Riyads Air, bringing more than 40 years of experience in the aviation, transportation and logistics industries.

Riyadh Air

In its ambitious plans, the new carrier Riyadh Air plans to serve more than 100 destinations around the world by 2030. Operating from Riyadh as its hub, the airline is aiming to become the largest airline in the Middle East, going head-to-head and beating regional giants such as Emirates, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Etihad Airways. The airline is expected to add USD20 billion to non-oil GDP growth, and create more than 200,000 direct and indirect jobs. Riyadh Air is wholly owned by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has more than $600 billion USD in assets and is the main driver of the kingdom’s efforts to diversify its economy and wean itself off oil.

As a PIF subsidiary, the new national airline is set to benefit from PIF’s investment expertise and financial capabilities while expanding on the company’s operations to become a leading world-class carrier. The new national airline represents PIF’s latest investment in the sector, along with the recently announced King Salman International Airport masterplan. The latter is expected to be one of the world’s largest airports covering an area of approximately 57 sq km (22 sq mi), allowing for six parallel runways and including Riyads’s current existing airport named after King Khalid. The airport aims to accommodate up to 120 million travelers by 2030 and 185 million travelers, with the capacity to process 3.5 million tons of cargo, by 2050.

Riyadh Air already announced that it has chosen the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to power its global launch and support its goal of operating one of the most efficient and sustainable fleets in the world. The carrier will purchase 39 highly efficient 787-9s, with options for an additional 33 787-9s (and is also in advanced negotiations  with Airbus to purchase dozens of A350 aircraft). The order with Boeing was made in parallel to an order by the country’s current flag carrier Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia), which will continue to work alongside Riyadh Air (offering different services and operating from Jeddah as its hub). In total, Saudi Arabian carriers announced their intent to purchase up to 121 Boeing 787 Dreamliners in what will be the fifth largest commercial order by value in Boeing’s history.

Riyadh Air will support Saudi Arabia’s goal of serving 330 million passengers and attracting 100 million visitors annually by 2030. Question is whether that will be possible since the Kingdom struggles with a bad reputation when it comes to human rights issues (e.g. oppression of women and the LGQTB+ community). Although Saudi Arabia announced important and necessary reforms in 2020, there’s still a long way to go and many travelers – especially Westerners – aren’t comfortable (yet) with the idea of holidaying in Saudi Arabia, transiting via the country or supporting a Saudi Arabian company. Some countries like the United Arab Emirates and the Maldives – which also follow a strict interpretation of Sharia law – have shown that you can become a prime tourist destinations (by applying a different set of rules for locals vs tourists in their resorts), but Saudi Arabia has a bigger reputation problem, at least as of now. Nonetheless, there’s no denying that the country looks beautiful as is evident from the YouTube video below (uploaded by one of my favorite content creators), so it will be interesting to see how it all plays out in the future.

Are you looking forward to flying with Ryadh Air? And would you feel comfortable traveling to or transiting via Saudi Arabia? Leave a comment.

2. The Langham Venice will open in 2023

With its direct frontage on the Venetian Lagoon, the 138-key Langham Venice Hotel will be located on the island of Murano, long revered for its centuries-old tradition of glass making. The hotel will be housed in the former Casino Mocenigo which can trace its legacy to the early 1600s. The historic building is an important illustration of Venetian architecture enriched by impressive frescoes with classical themes dedicated to music, poetry and love. The design for the guest rooms and public spaces will be inspired by the hotel’s rich history, resplendent frescoes, and breathtaking water views from its desirable lagoon frontage. 3. Singapore Airlines now offers free unlimited WiFi in Business Class

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has rolled out complimentary unlimited in-flight Wi-Fi for all Business Class passengers. In addition, members of KrisFlyer (SIA’s loyalty program) enjoy free three-hour Wi-Fi plans when traveling in Premium Economy Class and free two-hour Wi-Fi plans when traveling in Economy Class. Passengers who are not KrisFlyer members may take advantage of SIA’s simplified Wi-Fi price plans. These range from US$3.99 (approximately S$5.25) for one hour, US$8.99 (approximately S$11.80) for three hours, and US$15.99 (approximately S$21.00) for the entire flight. These enhancements further elevate the in-flight customer experience on board SIA flights, with the Airline’s Suites and First Class customers also enjoying complimentary unlimited Wi-Fi. As a result, SIA becomes one of the first airlines to offer complimentary unlimited Wi-Fi across its passenger network for its Suites, First Class, and Business Class customers, as well as PPS Club members. Previously, Business Class guests enjoyed 100MB worth of complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi. KrisFlyer members traveling in Premium Economy Class and Economy Class were offered a two-hour complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi plan that was optimized for text-only messaging services.

4. Virgin Atlantic names its latest Airbus A330neo after Queen Elizabeth II

Virgin Atlantic has named its newest aircraft Queen of the Skies in honor of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The airline’s brand new Airbus A330neo has the registration G-VEII, and is the second of Virgin Atlantic’s aircraft to be named Queen of the Skies. Back in 2004, her late majesty unveiled an Airbus A340-600 with the same name at a ceremony in Toulouse. Corneel Koster, chief customer and operations officer at Virgin Atlantic, commented: “Just like Queen Elizabeth during her historic 70-year reign, Virgin Atlantic is proud to fly the flag for the United Kingdom around the world. We’re delighted to soon be welcoming ‘Queen of the Skies’ to our fleet and hope that it serves as a fitting tribute to an unforgettable, much-loved monarch.” Virgin Atlantic has a long history of naming its aircraft after inspirational women, including Diana in tribute to Princess Diana. Virgin Atlantic’s current fleet includes Lade Emmeline (G-VLIB) which pays tribute to the founder of the Suffragette movement and women’s rights activist Emmeline Pankhurst. Fearless Lady (G-VEVE) celebrates the life of Eve Branson, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson’s late mother. Eve led an incredible life, enlisting in the WRENS during World War II, taking gliding lessons disguised as a boy, and working as a pioneering hostess on the treacherous British South American Airways routes.

5. Andaz Mexico City Condesa debuts in Mexico City’s Condesa neighborhood

Andaz Mexico City Condesa is the first urban Andaz property in Mexico and the second Andaz-branded hotel in the country following Andaz Mayakoba Riviera Maya. Located in the charming neighborhood of Condesa, an urban community radiating rich history and culture, the new hotel is ideally situated amongst many of the city’s most noteworthy art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants offering guests the very best of its locale. The interiors of the hotel are reflective of the global influence and progressive style found throughout Mexico City, and pair a modern edge with Art Deco design. The hotel offers 213 residentially inspired guestrooms, including 20 suites, all of which feature views of either the tree-lined avenues of the Condesa neighborhood, an elaborate internal courtyard or, from higher up, sweeping views of Mexico City. In keeping with the area’s reputation as the city’s culinary hotspot, the hotel’s dining venues complement the area’s thriving gastronomic scene. Cabuya Rooftop restaurant brings a Tulum-inspired beach-club ambiance to the hotel’s 17th floor terrace, which also features a rooftop pool. On the hotel’s second floor, guests and locals will find respite at Pasana Spa & Wellness, a sanctuary of relaxation honoring Mexican ancestral traditions of salt as a source of protection, using local products from Mexico.

6. Qatar Airways and Airbus settle their Airbus A350 dispute

According to Forbes, Qatar Airways and Airbus have reached a mutually agreeable settlement in relation to their legal dispute over A350 surface degradation and the grounding of A350 aircraft. The details of the settlement are confidential and the parties will now proceed to discontinue their legal claims. The settlement agreement is not an admission of liability for either party. This agreement will enable Qatar Airways and Airbus to move forward and work together as partners. Qatar had been the largest operator of the A350 in the world prior to the dispute breaking out, with 53 of the jets delivered out of an order for 76 of them made in June 2007. The airline said that in late 2020 it discovered the airframe of one of its A350s was showing premature and accelerated degradation on the surface. It later discovered similar problems on other aircraft. By August 2021, the Gulf airline said it had been forced to ground 13 of the aircraft following an explicit instruction from its regulator, the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority. Other planes were grounded in the following months. In December that year it issued legal proceedings against Airbus in the High Court in London. The “amicable settlement” now ends this bitter dispute and a repair project is underway to get these aircraft back in the air.

8. Qantas unveils Business and First Class cabins for its A350 aircraft

Qantas has unveiled prototypes of the First and Business cabins on the aircraft that will fly passengers non-stop from Australia to New York and London from late 2025. Designed with ultra-long haul travel in mind, the flagship cabins are the first to be developed from the ground up by a mix of aviation specialists, as well as Australian industrial design studio Caon Design, and a multidisciplinary team of scientists from the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre including sleep scientists. Key to the cabin design has been giving passengers more space, made possible by Qantas’ decision to configure its 12 Airbus A350s to seat 238 passengers compared to the 300-plus seat layout specified by other carriers. The spacious First suite has a range of features to make customers feel like they are in a mini boutique hotel room complete with an extra-wide fixed bed, separate recliner chair, personal wardrobe, dining table for two and a 32” ultra-high definition TV. Every Business suite will have direct aisle access for ease of moving around the cabin, and Qantas is incorporating sliding doors into the suite for privacy, if desired.  The Qantas A350 will have six First suites in a 1-1-1 configuration and 52 Business Suites in a 1-2-1 configuration.

Named after the natural thermal Aetna Springs discovered in the 1870s, the original resort thrived until the 1970s as a natural spa destination, with Aetna Mineral Water also sold throughout the American West. Award-winning architecture firm Olson Kundig will work alongside California-based Architectural Resources Group and renowned developer of multiple historic projects, Weller Development Partners, to ensure the structures are preserved and adapted to suit the next chapter in its story. There will also be 16 branded residences, which will be serviced by Six Senses and, alongside all the resort amenities, enjoy access to a dedicated lounge. 2. Six Senses will open a hotel in Tel Aviv’s iconic Golden Triangle

Six Senses Tel Aviv will mix five 110-year-old preservation buildings and sophisticated LEED Platinum sustainability standards for a new tower. The original five buildings date back to 1909 – the early days of Tel Aviv as the world now knows it –and are the best remaining heritage of the Ahuzat Bayit settlement, the first in the city. They will be joined together at the edge of Rothschild Boulevard to stretch across an entire city block between the prestigious Rothschild, Herzel, and Lilienblum Streets. Together they are considered the largest and most important preservation project in Tel Aviv. The heritage buildings will define the base and roots of a modern 42-floor tower. Once complete, it will house the 10-floor, 140-key Six Senses hotel, and 55 stylish and comfortable residences, rising a further 21 floors and serviced by Six Senses. Six Senses Tel Aviv will be an exciting addition to the brand’s Israel portfolio following the 2021 opening of Six Senses Shaharut, a sustainable haven set in the honeycomb dunes of the Negev Desert.

5. Air France unveils 17 partner chefs for 2023

To mark the Bocuse d’Or 2023 event of which Air France is an official partner, the company has unveiled the names of all the renowned chefs with whom it will be working this year. In 2023, 17 talented chefs promoting French excellence will take turns to sign exceptional dishes in La Première and Business and in airport lounges over the coming months. As the only airline to partner with so many distinguished names in the world of cuisine, Air France is reasserting more than ever its role as ambassador of French fine dining around the world.

  • On board long-haul flights from Paris, French Michelin-starred chefs Arnaud Lallement, Régis Marcon, Anne-Sophie Pic, Emmanuel Renaut and Michel Roth will this year take turns to sign exclusive dishes for Air France on the La Première and Business cabin menus. For the very first time, Mauro Colagreco and Thierry Marx will also be contributing their unique skills to this exceptional team of chefs. With vegetarian compositions, red and white meats from France, and fish from sustainable fishing, all the chefs are committed to showcasing the local produce of their regions in France and sharing their culinary heritage and passion.
  • In the La Première suites, the company’s most exclusive travel cabins, the Meilleur Ouvrier de France pastry chefs Philippe Urraca and for the first time Angelo Musa will bring an elegant and sweet touch to the menus in this cabin worthy of the finest restaurants.
  • Air France also continues to offer menus signed by top French chefs on long-haul flights departing from airports worldwide. The company continues to work with the triple Michelin-starred chef Julien Royer in the La Première and Business cabins on departure from Singapore. Originally from Auvergne, Julien Royer is at the helm of the Odette and Claudine restaurants in Singapore. On departure from Reunion Island, in the Business cabin, the menus are signed by chef Jofrane Dailly from Reunion Island, who works at the Diana Dea Lodge in Sainte-Anne. In 2023, Air France will offer menus signed by chef Olivier Perret on flights departing from Air France’s destinations in Canada (Montreal, Toronto, Quebec and Vancouver). He will focus on offering French gastronomy with fresh ingredients for menus in the Business cabin. Originally from Burgundy, the chef also presides at the restaurant Le Renoir at the Sofitel Montréal Le Carré Doré. Air France intends to further develop its partnership with these exceptional signature chefs, notably on departure from the French Caribbean, USA and Japan.
  • On its medium-haul network, in the Business cabin, Servair corporate chef François Adamski, Meilleur Ouvrier de France and Bocuse d’Or winner, signs the lunch or dinner dishes served on board all year round.
  • Air France also collaborates with several chefs in its Paris airport lounges. At Paris-Charles de Gaulle, the Alain Ducasse teams have thus created dishes for the Air France La Première lounge.
